Born in Gloucester City, N.J., Mr. Evans grew up in the Fairview section of Camden. He attended St. Joan of Arc, Hatch Jr. High, and Camden High School. Mr. Evans was an iron worker employed for 37 years by Morris-Wheeler Co in Philadelphia. He was an avid bowler and fisherman. He enjoyed all sports. He also enjoyed sport fishing from his boat. He was the first president of the Washington Township Athletic Association and was active in baseball, basketball, and football.
Tom had a gift for story-telling and enjoyed dancing. With great affection, he adored recounting the story of how he met the love of his life, Dorothy. After an evening roller skating, Tom was in a pharmacy and put money into a jukebox. A young lady came up and asked, “Do you dance?” Weeks later, walking down the street, Dorothy pointed to a ring in a window and said, “That’s the ring I want.” It was the first they spoke of marrying. Eight months later they became Mr. and Mrs. Evans.
Tom was a veteran of World War II, having served as a forward observer for artillery for the XII Corp, known as the “Spearhead of Patton’s Third Army.” He was very proud of his part in the Battle of the Bulge. Tom was a member of local V.F.W.
