Teruko Hanselman, age 96, of Sewell, NJ passed away Sunday, August 16, 2026 at Jefferson Hospital, Washington Township with her daughter, Penny Sturgeon and Gisbert Quinn by her side. She was born March 22, 1930 in Kurume City, Fukuoka Prefecture, Japan. She was preceded in death by her husband, the late Henry G. Hanselman, Sr. She was also preceded in death by two sons, Ken Hanselman and Glen Hanselman as well as all of her 4 siblings: one sister and three brothers.
ln1953, she met and married her husband Henry while he was stationed in Japan with the US Air Force. They were married for 67 years and lived in Egg Harbor City, NJ until 2001 when they moved to Lenoir, NC. She returned to New Jersey after Henry’s passing in February 2020 to live with her daughter.
She was a very talented, innate artist who painted many beautiful oil paintings in her lifetime. Some adorned her homes but many were also given as gifts to family and friends. They remain cherished reminders of her artistry.
She was a partner with her husband for many years in his furniture business where her creativity and sewing skills blended well. She was an avid reader and would read well into the early morning hours. She was also known as an excellent cook: making many German and Japanese dishes. She loved playing solitaire to relax nearly everyday. Although she lived in the United States for over 71 years she always had a strong affinity for Japan. She visited Japan several times after moving to the US and she loved watching Japanese TV on cable in her later years
Survivors include one son, Henry Hanselman, Jr and his wife Sandy of the Villages, FL; one daughter, Penny Sturgeon of Sewell, NJ; brother in law George Hanselman and his wife Phyllis of Egg Harbor, NJ; grandchildren Jill Hanselman, Amy Sturgeon, Alec Hanselman, Heather Hanselman, Amber Egan, Jaime Hanselman and Emily Ramos; several great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; and very dear friends Paula Sykes and Gisbert Quinn. She will be deeply missed.
