Rocco F. Caveng, Sr.,
On June 1, 2022, of Mantua. Age 71. Devoted father of Gregory Caveng (Katie), Eric Caveng (Alicia), Heather Gehring (James), Rocco Caveng, Jr. (Jennifer), and Mandy Leone. Loving grandfather of Justin, Johnny, Julia, Olivia, Nina, Natalie, Jillian, Gianna, Zoe, Eva, Eric, Mason, Rocco, Cayla, and Nick.
Rocco was born in 1950, an only child to Erwin Caveng and Frances Morelli. He grew up in Woodbury, where he enjoyed spending time with family and friends. His father worked for the railroad, and Rocco would often go meet up with him at this railroad stops. He spent much time with his friends George and Rick, hanging at Cikos (now Colonial Diner), playing cards, and driving to the shore in his convertible. He was the “mayor” at school, well-loved by many who were lucky enough to know him. He spent a lot of time working and getting into mischief with his cousin Anthony at their grandfather’s fruit stand. He was very fond of those memories and has always considered Anthony the brother he never had.
Rocco’s best friend George introduced him to his sister Joanna, with whom he had his five beautiful children. Rocco joined the Navy out of high school, and served on the USS Lexington during Vietnam. He enjoyed telling stories about the “Blue Ghost,” as the ship was known, and he had many stories to tell! After the Navy, he had many jobs including selling insurance, vacuums, and cars. He eventually found his career at Pandrol, Inc. making “the clip.” He retired a foreman there, and eventually got a retirement gig at Republic Bank where he enjoyed helping people and making their day just a little bit better.
If you ask anyone who knew him, they would tell you that he loved to tell stories. They may not all have been true, but it is true that they were all stories! He loved taking a drive to Atlantic City or really anywhere, but preferably in a Cadillac while listening to Sinatra or the Moody Blues. He was a great cook whose specialties were a mouth-watering pot of gravy and meatballs, chicken noodle soup, and a nice batch of long hots. He even created a cookbook for his family to pass along all of his favorite recipes. His favorite thing of all was spending time with his children and grandchildren, sharing a good meal with lots of love and laughter.
Rocco was a pleasant, easy-going, funny guy. To know him was to love him. He never complained, even when there was much to complain about. This last leg of his journey was rough, but there is comfort in knowing that he suffers no more and is finally at peace.
Family and friends are invited to attend his viewing Tuesday 6:00 – 8:00 pm and Wednesday 9:00 – 10:00 am at the Egizi Funeral Home, 119 Ganttown Road, Washington Twp. Funeral service 10:00 am. Interment Gloucester County Veteran Memorial Cemetery, Williamstown.
