I taught side by side with Dr. Mooney for many years at Penn Dental. I always looked forward to spending time with him on Tuesday afternoons. He was a dedicated educator who truly loved imparting his knowledge to the students and residents. He was a true giant in the history of the oral and maxillofacial surgery department at Penn. I have always said that he knew something about everything. His worldly knowledge was unmatched. As a person, he loved his country, his wife Joan and his daughter Anne who he spoke of often. My sincere condolences to the entire family. He will be missed.

My wife and I both knew Dr. Mooney very well as we both worked with him at the VA in Philadelphia. He loved to tell stories and was never in a bad mood. He made the VA a fun place to work and really gave us insight into what the vets experienced and how to best serve them. As, with many of my former attendings, I think of him often and the crazy stories of getting Al's beef, going to the Triangle Tavern, or just going to Beijing for Chinese food at lunch. He was a very good man and we will miss him. Margie and I offer our sincerest condolences. Best, Steve Baker former oral surgery Resident 1990 1996

Dr. Mooney was one of the best mentors I’ve had. He treated us with respect while ensuring we learned. He was my GPR director at the VA and eventually became a colleague. We would hang onto every word and story. He was full of energy who loved what he did and loved his family. He has played a big role in my professional journey and for that I will always be grateful. Sending my deepest condolences to Mrs. Mooney and family. Dr. Mooney will forever be in our hearts and memories.

Dr. Mooney was an incredible man who helped patients, students, residents, colleagues and the disciplines of Medicine/Dentistry/Surgery. An incredible impactful career which paved the way for many future practitioners. His grace, patience and respectful socratic teaching empowered his students to treasure learning and implement the acquired knowledge for the delivery of compassionate patient care. His legacy lives through the hearts and hands of the doctors he trained. He was so proud of me when I was commissioned into the Navy and subsequently completed my OMS residency. He always emphasized paying forward deeds as the true thanks for his help in my education and development as a person. I most fondly remember the times I would play pranks on him in the Oral Surgery Clinic at Penn. He told me numerous times that “I am going to kick your ass right off this planet,” to which I would retreat away in laughter. Even though he was grouchy at times, he could not suppress the reciprocatory laughter.

My deepest condolences to the Mooney family. I was deeply saddened to hear of Dr. Mooney's passing. Over the past 30 years, he has been my mentor, a guide, and a source of inspiration. His wisdom, compassion, and dedication not only shaped my career but made me a better dentist. Dr. Mooney taught me more than just dental and oral surgical knowledge; he taught me the importance of empathy, critical thinking, and the profound responsibility I have as a healthcare provider. The lessons he imparted, through his dedicated instruction as well as through his compassion and passion, will continue to guide me throughout my career, especially now as I take on a residency director role. I am so grateful for the years I had to learn from him. His impact on my life and career is immeasurable, and I will carry his teachings with me always. Please know my thoughts are with the Mooney family and his loved ones during this time. I hope they find comfort in knowing how deeply he touched so many lives, including mine.

Dr Mooney was a legend and had a tremendously positive impact on the careers of thousands of DMD students at the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine. I considered him not only a colleague but a dear friend. His service to this country was exemplary, and he served as a mentor to DMD students entering the military as officers after their graduation, and to numerous oral surgery and general practice dentistry residents. He will sorely be missed.
