John F. Butler
Age 77 from Glassboro, bravely transitioned on January 16, 2024, surrounded by family.
Beloved husband of Anjel (nee Renzi). Devoted father of Lauren Hodges (Jonathan) and Lindsay Butler.
Adoring grandfather of Madelyn, Brayden, and Robby. Dear brother of Donald, Joan Niessen (Bob), and
Gerry, and the late Joseph, Robert, and William. Loved by many nieces and nephews and their families.
John took his journey on the same day as his brother Robert (“Bubs”).
John was born in Philadelphia and grew up in Mount Airy, PA, where he formed lifelong friendships. He
attended Cardinal Dougherty High School, Temple University, and received his MBA from LaSalle
College. He was known as “The Tax Man” by many, working tirelessly on taxes in addition to his full-time
jobs, including University of Pennsylvania and Drexel University as Tax Director.
John and Anjel were happily married for 39 years and raised their daughters in Washington Township,
New Jersey. John always had a project he was working on in the house, but that never stopped him from
being an involved dad, coaching sports and attending every school function. John and Anjel moved to
Lake Oberst in Glassboro in 2018, enjoying their family time with their grandchildren. John was the best
“Pop”, traveling to support Maddie and Brayden at their hockey games, flying kites and building Lego
creations with Robby, and taking family trips everywhere Lindsay dragged him to make memories.
John was wise and full of knowledge from all of his interests: birding, bicycling, astronomy, trains, traveling,
gardening, classic movies, and history. You could bring up any topic and John would know something
about it. His keen sense of navigation helped him as he traveled the back roads of South Jersey
searching for rare birds. You would never find him on the A.C. Expressway, as he always preferred to take
the “scenic route”, even though it added hours to a drive. The woods were John’s church, and nature was
his religion. He enjoyed life’s simple pleasures – nothing made him happier than a bowl of ice cream, a
hearty breakfast at a diner, Philadelphia sports, or proudly watching his nephew coach football.
Family and friends are invited to attend his visitation Saturday, February 10th 9:00 – 11:00 AM at the Egizi
Funeral Home, 119 Ganttown Rd., Washington Twp. At 11:00 AM, there will be a time for sharing
thoughts, memories, prayers, and love offered by family and friends. Inurnment Gloucester County
Veteran’s Memorial Cemetery, Williamstown.
In lieu of flowers, donations in John’s memory may be made to the Cape May Bird Observatory or St.
Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
