Dear Extended Woody Family, Still in high school under Joan Woody's leadership, I became a volunteer EMT. (Washington Twp. Ambulance Association) After my first call, Joan called me & said, "I heard you on the radio. You were very professional. Keep it up!" Local volunteer EMTs were not only serving our community, we were serving for the approval of Joan. Joan had no problem FIRING a volunteer if he / she missed a single shift. So often, Joan would respond to a call & she DID NOT play games. She could rival any field trauma surgeon. That little lady would "dive in" to any mangled vehicle, hold stabilization... complete control of any medical scene. Our simple uniforms were a blue tee shirt & blue jeans. Joan made sure we had the best equipment & God help you if an oxygen tank or other supplies weren't stocked / onboard. Joan was the "tough love" mother. At our meetings, she would go to battle for what was in the best interest of not only our organization, but more importantly, the injured we served. No patient was ever billed & we ran quite fine on a shoestring. We'd have one annual sticker drive & bring in other operational funds by being the weekend ambulances @ Bridgeport Speedway. We prided ourselves in RARELY having another "squad" pick up a call for us. As days were always "light" on volunteers, a "2nd Duty" call had any / all available EMTs headed to the hall. We'd pick up one of the "rigs" & were out. Upon arrival, our EMTs hustled straight to the patient(s.) We didn't "play" with the stretcher & meander in. Time was always of the essence. If Joan was coming, (10-9-01) we were in good shape. If you had a "tough love" real mother, that was Joan. Her FIRE wasn't against you. It was about making you a better EMT & PROTECTING what was one of the greatest volunteer emergency services in the entire region. Joan made a calendar of the volunteer "shifts" we were working. Overnight, one person would keep an ambulance at his / her house & your crew consisted of EMTs who lived near one another. In Whitman Square, our crew included EMTs George (RIP) Delaney, Kathy Mango, Pat Dolgos & me. We'd be standing @ the street & still get to scenes within 7 minutes of being woken in the middle of the night. We had a 2nd duty crew from another part of town & even had scores of volunteers (in our organization) from nearby towns. Years later, I would meet my future wife, Michelle (Nyzio) Gurcsik. She was the President & I was a Trustee. Joan even took attendance at meetings. God Speed, Captain. You were the little lady with the big radio & fierce leadership. You protected your cubs as a mother lion & every politician knew you "had it handled." "Running" with 10-9 truly meant something. You smoked near our oxygen tanks, but even the oxygen knew not to question you! (haha) You'll always be one of a kind. You were a General with one goal: patient outcomes to those we served. Meetings were one week & drills were the next. Woody Family, Thank you for allowing Joan the time to do so much for so many.
