George J. Duddy, Sr.
On December 2, 2020, of Bellmawr. Age 81. Beloved husband of late Madeline (nee Toummia), Devoted father of Linda (the late Walt), George, Jr. (Suzanne) and John (Tina). Proud grandfather of Walter, Cory, Zachary, Georgie, Christopher, Amanda, Johnny, Ryan and Halie. Loving great grandfather of Sophia and Cianna. Dear brother of Joani Robinson.
George was born on July 12, 1939 in West Philadelphia, Pa. George (known as “DUDDY” OR “The Golden Greek”) was actively involved in sports. He was a Golden Bear @ St. Thomas More Highschool in which he played basketball, baseball, and football. He was an altar boy for St. Donato’s Parish. After high school, he continued to play center field for Rocke, Men’s baseball league in West Philly.
April 1963, George, married his beautiful wife Madeline, they lived in Cobbs Creek located in West Philly. They have 3 children; Linda, George and John. A very devoted husband and father who loved his family above all things.
George retired as a Philadelphia Police Officer at South Detective. (George loved telling his stories of his days as police officer.)
In 1976, the family moved to Bellmawr, NJ. For the last 44 years, George was actively involved in Bellmawr with sports and during elections with the Poll Booths.
After years of playing sports himself, George transitioned to coaching. He coached George and John’s youth football teams, the Bellmawr Purple Eagles and Bellmawr Tigers. He was the Defensive Football Coach for St. Joe’s Prep in Philadelphia, Pa. Later, Head Coach for the Bellmawr Broncos, semi-pro men’s football team. Under his leadership they were the “Undefeated Champions” for several years. He coached Garden State & Tri-County baseball a semi-pro baseball team for several years.
Needless to say, George touched a lot of players and families throughout the years.
Madeline would say, “Anything with a “BALL” he could do; as far as anything else, not so much!!” LOL
Afterwards, he enjoyed going to all his grandchildren’s games. Never missed one! Baseball, basketball, wrestling, lacrosse, and football. Of course, football being his favorite. The team and families knew him and listened for the next play. You always heard Pop Duddy.
George will be surely missed by all but most of all by his 3 children and grandchildren. Ultimately, we know that he is with his true love, Madeline. We should all take comfort in knowing that he is with Mommy (MomMom) now.
Family and friends are invited to attend his viewing Monday December 14th 7:00-9:00 PM and Tuesday 8:00-9:00 AM at the Egizi Funeral Home, 119 Ganttown Rd., Washington Twp. Mass of Christian Burial 10:00 AM at Mary, Mother of the Church, Bellmawr. Interment, Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Berlin.
