Fred C. Babel
On June 5, 2024 of Washington Twp. Age 94. Beloved husband of Eileen (nee Breslin). Devoted father of Neil Babel (Kathi), Gary Babel (Victoria), Judith Centola (Steven), and Angel Viviani (Chris). Loving grandfather of Justin (Nicole), Jason, Stefan (Chloe), Zachary, Andrea, and Hope. Proud great-grandfather of Brayden and Julian. Dear brother of Ronald Babel (Kathleen) and Carol Ann Babel. Loved by nieces and nephews.
Fred Babel, a proud veteran of the U.S. Army and devoted family man, passed away peacefully at his home, surrounded by his loving wife of 70 years, Eileen, and his extended family.
Fred had a lengthy Philadelphia newspaper career as a stereotyper and pressman, one he enjoyed immensely, working at the Philadelphia Bulletin, The Philadelphia Inquirer, The Daily News, and the Courier Post.
Retired for many years thereafter in Ocean City, NJ he was a longstanding active member of the VFW and American Legion, often “helping out” behind the bar.
A die-hard Philadelphia sports fan, Fred was a longtime season ticket holder for the Philadelphia Eagles all the way back to Franklin Field; joyfully handing those tickets down to his sons and grandsons. Though the Eagles were his team, he enjoyed watching the Phillies in the Eagles off-season. 🙂 He often celebrated his birthdays with a “delicious” steak dinner at The Pub, a tradition he cherished and thoroughly enjoyed.
His many stories from his military service during the Korean War clearly demonstrated the immense pride he took in being an Army soldier. He was honored with the United Nations Service Medal, the Combat Infantry Badge, the Korean Service Medal, and two Bronze Stars, all signifying his valor. Though the military may have been a career path, his love for his high school sweetheart, Eileen, brought him home to marry her and start a family – a decision his children remain grateful for.
Fred was a man’s man, an honorable patriarch who devotedly took care of his family out of love and a sense of responsibility as a husband and father. The family’s foundation was built on love, security, discipline, mutual respect, and warmth – an enviable dynamic noticed by others.
A social, loving man who will be dearly missed, Fred Babel left an indelible mark on his family through his service, dedication, and unconditional love. He is survived by his wife Eileen, and children Neil (Kathi), Gary (Victoria), Judy (Steven), and Angel (Christopher), and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. 💗
Family and friends are invited to attend his visitation Saturday, June 15th 10:45 – 11:45 AM at The Church of The Holy Family, 226 Hurffville Rd., Washington Twp. Mass of Christian Burial 11:45 AM.
In honor of Fred’s life, in lieu of flowers or other acts of sympathy, we would encourage any donations to https://www.vfw.org/.
