Frank B. Smith
On February 2, 2024 of Cherry Hill, formerly of Washington Twp. Age 87. Beloved husband of Mary Jane (nee Berringer). Devoted father of Brian Smith, Amy Spence, and Megan Smith. Loving grandfather of Ethan Spence and Raelyn Smith. Dear brother of the late Dr. Richard Smith (Nancy) and cousin of Eileen Corkery (Gerald). Loved by many in-laws, nieces, nephews, and, cousins.
Born in Philadelphia in 1936, Frank attended Wildwood Catholic before studying at Saint Charles Borromeo Seminary for five years. He then served his country in Army Intelligence, primarily stationed in Germany. After leaving the military in 1961, he first worked in the insurance industry before finding his vocation in the mortgage business. He worked for and founded many companies over the years, the largest being US Mortgage Corporation, which was subsequently acquired by PHH Mortgage Corporation. Over the decades, he served on many advisory boards and committees as a member of the industry.
One of his proudest accomplishments was helping found the Housing Authority of Gloucester County in 1972, and serving as its Chairman for over 25 years. He returned to the HAGC in 2012 as a Commissioner and continued to serve until last year, helping provide quality safe and affordable housing to the low-income elderly, disabled, and families of Gloucester County. He was also appointed by the Governor for over 15 years to the NJ Housing & Mortgage Finance Agency.
He was an active and devoted parishioner of Church of the Holy Family in Sewell, NJ, from its early days at the fire hall. He was a lector, eucharistic minister, and collection counter; and for many years was Chair of the Finance Committee, helping with building the extension on the church and constructing the Aquin Center.
He deeply loved his family and friends, and was never happier than when doing something with or for them. Some of his fondest memories were traveling with Janie and the kids and any friends he could drag along, from London to Ireland to Bermuda and Disney World to Copenhagen and Dubrovnik, and many places in between. He loved the house in Ocean City and the boat (even if he famously hated the beach); train adventures, both real and abstract; reading history, mysteries and science fiction; and being a gracious host to anyone who knocked on his door.
Family and friends are invited to attend his visitation Wednesday 10:30 AM – 12:00 PM at The Church of The Holy Family, 226 Hurffville Rd., Washington Twp. Mass of Christian Burial 12:00 PM.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Frank’s memory may be made to the Jefferson Moss-Magee Rehabilitation Center.
