Francis J. Smith
On January 1, 2018 of Glassboro. Age 89. Beloved husband of Mary Ellen (nee Hanna). Devoted father of Tara Dowling (David), Michael Smith, and Bridget Smith. Loving grandfather of Olivia. Dear brother of Peggy Brown, Susan Particelli and Patrick Smith.
Frank was born in Tyrone Ireland on January 30th, 1928. He came to the United States as a young boy and grew up in South West Philadelphia. As the oldest of 10 children he inherited the most responsibility, but accepted that by working to help support his large family. He was an excellent football player and a huge Philadelphia A’s and Phillies fan. He graduated from West Catholic High; upon graduation he enlisted in the United States Navy where he served our country for two years. After he was honorably discharged, he attended evening classes at the Wharton School of Pennsylvania, but continued working for the Pennsylvania Railroad as an auditor. It was there when he met his beautiful wife Mary Ellen.
The two were married and went on to have three children. He adored his children almost as much as they adored him. He was a true family man. He cherished family vacations, especially trips to amusement parks and the Jersey Shore. He retired from Conrail after 42 years. Later in life, his greatest joy was the birth of his granddaughter Olivia. He was the proudest pop in the world and in Olivia’s words, “Pop is my favorite person in the world.”
Relatives and friends are invited to attend his viewing Friday 7:00-9:00 PM and Saturday 8:15-9:15 AM at the Egizi Funeral Home, 119 Ganttown Rd. Washington Twp. Mass of Christian Burial 10:00 AM at St. Bridget’s RC Church, Glassboro. Interment, SS Peter & Paul Cemetery, Springfield, PA.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Francis’ memory may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, 3 Eves Drive Suite 310 Marlton, NJ 08053.
