Dr. Moyer began his superintendency of the Deptford Township school district in May 1978 and remained in that position continuously until he retired from the district in 2004. Dr. Moyer was recognized and respected among his colleagues for accomplishing things to completion. That same tireless persistence was the driving force behind all of the positive changes that took place in the district during his tenure. His basic philosophy of “the children come first” permeated the attitudes and behavior of all of the district’s personnel who worked with him. In 1980, Dr. Moyer served as Commissioner of the Olympic Athletic Conference. He was the recipient of the American Association of School Administrators’ (AASA) National Academy of School Executives Certificate of Achievement and was a Life Member in the New Jersey Congress of Parents and Teachers. In 1993, he was selected as one of ten superintendents in the United States to participate in the British Council’s American Education Policymakers Study Tour in Northern Ireland. In 2003, Dr. Moyer was elected Chairperson of the Aspiring Superintendents and Principals Advisory Committee of the American Association of School Administrators. He initiated the Naval Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (NJROTC) Program within the Deptford Township School District. He is also the author of more than 30 professional publications.
After retirement from the Deptford Township School District in 2004, Dr. Moyer served as Interim Superintendent for numerous South Jersey school districts, including, but not limited to, Woodbury, Ocean City and Pittsgrove Township.
Outside of his professional career, Dr. Moyer maintained an interest in golf since he learned to play while working during the summers in high school and throughout college at Shawnee Country Club. He served as the Chairperson of the NJASA Leadership Development Golf Tournament since its inception in 1995, and additionally worked events associated with the PGA Champions Tour.
Throughout his life, Dr. Moyer’s family was most important. He felt great joy at the successes and achievements of his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He encouraged his family’s academic and athletic pursuits, including sharing his love of golf with his three grandsons who now play regularly. He left a great imprint on all of our lives and will be deeply missed.
