Dorothy Marie Schwartz, 97, of Sewell, NJ, passed into the arms of her Lord and Savior on Friday, August 14, 2020.
Dot, the youngest of four, was born on November 10, 1922 to Warren & Blanche Wright in Philadelphia. She grew up in Aldan, PA. After high school and attending a secretarial program, she worked in the offices of The Philadelphia Transportation Company (PTC).
Best friends, Carl and Nancy, introduced William Leeds Schwartz to Dot. Bill took one look at her legs and told Carl, “I am going to marry that girl”. So on March 12, 1947, Dottie and Bill were married at the Aldan Union Church in Aldan, PA and lived in Ridley Park in a friend’s upstairs apartment. They had their first child, Beverly and moved into 28 North Bonsall Avenue, Glenolden, PA which was to be their home together for many years to come.
With the birth of Bev, Dot dedicated her life to being a wonderful and caring wife and mother. Their second child, Carolyn, finally came along 4 years later. Dot was very talented and loved cooking, sewing, knitting and entertaining. It was nothing for her to whip up a soufflé in the middle of the week while making sure we were all seated at the table before it “fell”. Once Dot knew your meal likes and dislikes, she always made her menu match your preferences.
Dot was a loving and caring woman who continually put others’ needs in front of her own. She participated in the choir, teaching Sunday School and even a bowling league, but her focus was always her home and family. She created many wonderful memories and passed along much knowledge and wisdom to her children and those around her. Dot lived out the meaning of “for better or worse” in their 61 year marriage by steadfastly caring for Bill as he declined in later years until his passing on February 12, 2008. In many ways Dot was a Proverbs 31 woman of character, and her children and grandchildren are blessed beyond to measure by her caring love, and she is already missed greatly.
Dorothy is the last of her family’s generation, predeceased by her sister Blanche Patterson, and brothers Albert and Raymond Wright. She is survived by daughters Beverly Ainsworth and husband Michael of Algonquin, IL, Carolyn Pfeiffer of Sewell, NJ and grandchildren David Pfeiffer and wife Taylor Jackson of Charlotte, NC and Samantha Pfeiffer of Detroit, MI. Inky, a portly black cat, became Dorothy’s “second husband”, who she doted on continually and assuredly misses her constant companionship.
There will be a private burial at Arlington Cemetery in Drexel Hill, PA on Friday, August 21, 2020. The family will plan a memorial service in 2021. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to either Dot’s last church home, Glenolden Congregational Church, 115 S. Scott Avenue, Glenolden, PA 19036 or to Samaritan’s Purse, PO Box 3000, Boone, NC 28607 https://sampur.se/34bartb
Her children arise and call her blessed, her husband also, and he praises her: “Many women do noble things, but you surpass them all.” Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting; but a woman who fears the LORD is to be praised. Give her the reward she has earned, and let her works bring her praise at the city gate. Proverbs 31:28-31
