Donald G. Sowney, Sr.
On September 30, 2021 of Mullica Hill. Age 71. Beloved husband of JoAnne (nee Cleaver). Devoted father of Danielle N. Smith,
(Terry, Jr.) and Donald G. Sowney, Jr. (Lindsay). Loving grandfather of Lyndon, Alec and Donald, III. Dear brother of Carol Datz (Bill), Wilbert “Bill” Sowney (Kathleen), Karen Capanna (Jay), and the late James Sowney, Jr. Don is also survived by his sister-in-law Deborah Sowney and brother-in-laws John (Terry) Cleaver, Robert (Karen) Cleaver and many loving nieces and nephews.
Born in Woodbury, NJ he was the son of the late James and Dorothy (Klett) Sowney. He grew up in Washington Township and was a graduate of Washington Township High School. He was a proud veteran of the US Navy. He served 4 years as an Aviation Electrician on the USS America. He was awarded the National Defense Service Medal for his service during the Vietnam War. Don worked at DuPont Chambers Works as a Product Team Manager and retired after 34 years.
Devoted husband to his wife JoAnne for 47 years. He was the loving son-in-law to the late George and Frances (Cerulli) Cleaver. Don and JoAnne resided in Washington and Harrison Townships where they lovingly raised their children, Danielle and Donny. A jack-of-all trades, he could fix anything. He enjoyed spending time with friends on C Dock and their boat, Pain Management, at Lighthouse Point Marina in Wildwood. His favorite place to travel was Saint Maarten where he would go sailing on the Random Wind. The most precious gifts in his life were his grandchildren, Lyndon, Alec, and Trey. His favorite job was running Pop-Pop daycare.
Don had the most gentle nature, kind heart, and loved everyone who had the pleasure of knowing him.
Family and friends are invited to attend his viewing Tuesday 7:00-9:00 PM and Wednesday 9:00-10:00 AM at the Egizi Funeral Home, 119 Ganttown Rd., Washington Twp. Funeral service 10:00 AM. Interment, Gloucester County Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Williamstown.
