Daniel E. Devlin, III, on August 4, 2014, of Deptford. Age 77. Loving uncle of Susan Allen, William Guidry, Mary Ann Olmo, Francis Guidry, Kathryn Mogck, Eileen Blemings and Kevin Guidry. Dear brother of the late Kathryn “Kitty” Guidry.
Unc grew up as the only boy in a family of girl Devlin cousins. He spent his formative years at Saint Joan of Arc Elementary School in Fairview NJ. As a teenager, Unc worked with his dad and Uncle Walt at “Devlin Brothers Paper Hanging and Painting Co”. Unc was a “cool” guy who had some creative ideas. He charged to park cars at his own sister’s wedding. (He made a bundle!)
Later he worked as a painter for Thomas Merryfield Inc. and then on May 5, 1980 he started in shop 71 “Painters” in the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard. Unc enjoyed working at the Navy Yard and worked there until the Yard closed in 1995.
Outside of work Unc spent hours laughing and joking with his 7 nieces and nephews at 157 Peterson Blvd., In Woodbury Gardens, Deptford, NJ. Unc was always good for puzzles, riddles, goofy questions and funny nicknames. He enjoyed sitting on the front stoop smoking his Pall Mall cigarettes after dinner each night. Then he would shave and get ready to hit the town, which often meant walking to Three Points Bar or Half-Way Inn in Westville Grove.
Fast, sporty cars were a big part of Unc’s life. Remember his vanity tag: “R U GAME? Unc loved nice cars and took great pains cleaning and polishing them. Everyone knew not to mess with Unc’s car! He chauffeured for brides and grooms at Sue and Paul and Frank and Fran’s weddings. One of Unc’s claims to fame was the black and white car he bought from second baseman Dave Cash of the Philadelphia Phillies. He actually broke his big toe while dreaming that someone was stealing his car! (He jumped out of bed and smashed his foot while trying to stop the imaginary thief!)
Saturday mornings would find Unc reading the paper and picking his favorite horses for the Atlantic City Race Track and Garden State Park in Cherry Hill. He loved horses and the race track. He also loved classic chocolate tastykakes, Philadelphia soft pretzels, fried chicken TV dinners, and crabs. Unc loved coffee; we were NEVER supposed to clean out his mug.
Unc loved his nieces and nephews and his great nieces and nephews; and we loved him too. He was there for all of the major events in our lives.
And he never told us the answer to his favorite question: “Do you think the rain will hurt the rhubarb?”
Relatives and friends are invited to attend his viewing Friday 8:30 – 9:30 am at the Egizi Funeral Home, 119 Ganttown Road, Washington Twp. Mass of Christian Burial 10:00 am at SS. Peter & Paul RC Church, Washington Twp. Interment New St. Mary’s Cemetery, Bellmawr.
