On December 15, 2023, Cole Patrick ‘Fightin’ Fitzgerald, age 19, passed peacefully at home surrounded by his loving family after an 18-month courageous cancer battle. Beloved son of William and Keren Fitzgerald (nee Jacobson), cherished brother of Maeve and Maggie Fitzgerald. Grandson of Patricia and the late Lee Jacobson and William and Mary Fitzgerald. Dear nephew of Erin and Steven Pimpinella, Thomas Jacobson, Scott Fitzgerald, Lisa Fitzgerald, Denise Vicario and Great Nephew to Susan and Daniel Vicario. Loving cousins include Ava and Alexandra Pimpinella and Gabriella and Kaya Mesulam. He will miss watching all of the Eagles and Phillies games with best friend, Andrew Seagreaves.

Cole was a 2022 cum laude honors graduate of Washington Township High School. He was also a student assistant coach for Washington Township Youth Football and served 4 years as a coaching assistant at WTHS. There are 2 annual awards at the Youth Football and High School level established in his name – The Cole Fitzgerald Most Inspirational Player Award – due to his devotion and support of both programs. He attended Bunker Hill Middle School where he was one of the inaugural People’s Choice Award winners for always exhibiting a positive, can-do attitude despite having multiple disabilities and being a childhood cancer survivor of Stage 4 Neuroblastoma.

Cole received a generous scholarship to attend Temple University which fulfilled his dream to go to a D1 Football school. In June 2022 just after graduation, he was hired to be part of the Temple Owls Equipment Staff as an incoming freshman and enjoyed that role until August when he was diagnosed with Metastatic Pancreatoblastoma. He also attended Temple full time while he was in treatment achieving a 3.5 GPA.

Cole was also a proud Student Leader Ambassador for Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation along with his family since age 6. He spent a considerable amount of his childhood, along with his family, raising funds, awareness and speaking to sponsors about the importance of funding Childhood Cancer research. For the last 9 years, Cole appeared on the CBS3 Alex’s Lemonade Telethon with his family to share his journey and to inspire others to donate to the cause.

Cole earned his Black Belt in Kickboxing at age 11 and was a hard-working student throughout his academic career. At WTHS, Cole was on Executive Class Council for 4 years and inducted in National Honor Society as a junior. There was never an obstacle that he could not overcome, and he did it all with a smile. He knew more about football strategy than any NFL coach and dreamed of one day working full time as a professional coach. He never complained about why he developed cancer for a second time after his successful battle fought at age 3. While all his achievements are impressive for such a young man, to know Cole was to love him. Cole was a friend to everyone he met, and he was always his authentic self. He possessed an incredible sense of humor, loved to banter, and talk about football and WWE/AEW wrestling and was quick to tell others that he loved them. He had a genuine concern for others and enjoyed cheering on his sisters in their own endeavors. He was a born and bred passionate Philadelphia Eagles, Phillies, and Flyers fan. In his last gift to the advancement of science and targeted cures, Cole is donating all of his tumor tissue to CHOP and to Memorial Sloan Kettering so he may help these 2 incredible institutions find a cure for rare cancers and hopefully save others.

We will miss him for the rest of our lives.

Family and friends are invited to attend a Celebration of Life that will be held Friday, April 5, 2024 at 7:00 PM at the Tom Brown Field at Washington Township High School. Cole spent every Friday night of the best years of his life on the sidelines at that field screaming “LFG”. Fly high our hero… LFG Coach Cole!

I’m so very sorry for ur loss prayers for family of Cole

I had the opportunity to teach Cole during his first semester as a freshman as a sport & recreation management major at Temple University. It was such a pleasure to work with and learn from Cole. He was in treatment, and fighting so hard, but still made school a priority. He was such a motivation with his approach, engagement, and working with others in the class. He took great pride in his school work and the results. He was a positive example for all. Next semester, I am going to start each class sharing Cole's story and how he tooke advantage of every opportunity he had in the time he had. He will continue to motivate.... My deepest condolences to Cole's family, friends, and those who knew and love him, as there are many. I speak on behalf of everyone at Temple University in sharing that our thoughts are and will continue to be with you.

Many of my favorite memories at WTHS were because of Cole. From the start of his freshmen year, he blew me away with his leadership - helping to design and deliver our first full school pep rally in years. Far too many memories to write down leading up to the night of graduation with the Class of 2022. That week was no doubt the best experience of my work life, and it was because of the time I was blessed to have with Cole. Cole is a true TWP legend and hero - admired and respected by his peers and our staff alike. RIP, Cole. And rest easy knowing that you left our school and our community so much better off because we had you leading the way.

My deepest condolences to the Fitzgerald family. I never knew Cole as well as everyone else did. I moved to New Jersey in 2021 and was the new kid at WTHS. I remember everyone having to introduce themselves in their home room class. Cole and I had home room together. It was my turn to introduce myself and I had told everyone that I had just moved there and Cole gave me a warm welcome and asked where I had lived previously and what made me move. Cole always gave me a warm smile while passing the hallways. I always enjoyed seeing him on the morning announcements talking so passionately about football and just being his funny self. I’m glad I got to meet him. It will always be an honor to have met and known Cole. 🕊️

I knew Cole since middle school we did choir and drama together. Cole was always so sweet and always put a smile on everyone’s face. I remember in middle school he always made doing the plays so enjoyable. After the plays we even went to his house for an after party and would all be dancing and having fun! I’m praying for his family and friends. You will be missed Cole!

Cole burned so bright. He made an impression on everyone he came in contact with, but especially his teachers. To have a full year of interacting with him daily, watching him set goals and work so hard to achieve them. He needed an A in chemistry to make Principals List his junior year and boy did he earn it. I was so proud and excited for him. I already missed him after he graduated, but now the world is a little less bright with his passing.

I was so sorry to hear of Cole’s passing. What a bright light he was to see roaming the halls at WTHS and at our football games! He and my daughter met at kickboxing many years ago and he was always very kind. Sending many prayers and thoughts to you all.
