Martin Norman,
On March 23, 2017, of Washington Twp. Age 99. Beloved husband of Pat (nee Croddy), the late Angie Corrao Norman and the late Pauline Vitow. Devoted father of Fred (Tatiana), Robert (Gloria), Linda DiMascio, Suzanne Zingler (Dan Meister), Ronald (Teresa) and Stephen (Janice). Loving grandfather of 10. Proud great-grandfather of 9.
Marty Norman was born in Philadelphia, PA. He lived there with his parents David and Fannie and his younger sister, Anita. As a young child, Marty spent a few years of his childhood in California. He would reminisce how beautiful California was from time to time. One vivid memory he had was going to his neighbor’s house to eat homemade tortillas. He said he could still smell her making them from scratch.
As a young man, Marty attended Temple University. He earned an associate’s degree in engineering. He worked at Shavitz Engineering. During WWII, Marty worked on and installed radar on US ships. Marty was thrilled to help in the war effort since he unable to enlist due to his eye sight issues. Marty did not give up his dream to fly though. As a young man, Marty met Amelia Earhart. Marty told her he wanted to fly and Earhart told him to never give up his dreams. Eventually, Marty took flying lessons and even bought his own plane. He loved flying!
As for Marty’s work life, that continued on after Shavitz Engineering. Marty took a job in Oklahoma as a manager of a large plant. Unfortunately, the plant was destroyed by a tornado. So, Marty moved his family back to New Jersey. After moving back to New Jersey, Marty joined the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees (IATSE). He began a career as a business agent for IATSE. Marty also enjoyed his free time and he joined the Masons in The Grand Lodge of NJ.
Marty had an infectious laugh and he often laughed at his own jokes. Marty has left quite a legacy that will live on through 6 children, 10 grandchildren and 9 great- grandchildren. We all thank God that Marty had a long and robust life. He lived life on his terms and he had an amazing 99 years on this earth!
