On August 4, 2010, of Washington Twp. Age 17. Beloved son of James E., Sr. and Eileen M. nee McHugh Schnapp. Dear brother of James E., Jr. and Troy M. Schnapp. Devoted grandson of Raymond G. and Marjorie Schnapp and William R. and Veronica A. McHugh. Loving nephew of William and Judy, and Dan McHugh Dot; Carol and Bruce Fitzgerald; Mary and Fred McGarvey; Raymond “Steve” and Anne, Charles and Kelly, Michael and Sue, and Mark and Kim Schnapp; and Margaret and Howard Zane. Also survived by many dear cousins and great friends.

Although Derek lost his four-year fight against rhabdomyosarcoma, he would like us to not mourn his death, but to honor his life and cherish all the wonderful memories. He endured incredible pain and suffering over the last few years and never complained. We all should follow his example.

Derek loved fishing with his Dad, Jimmy, Pop-pop, and uncles, playing video games with Troy, playing soccer with Brandon, Andrew, and his many other soccer buddies, skateboarding with Jack, hanging out with Bre, playing his guitar, making food with Gramma, listening to Grandpa’s Navy stories, picking vegetables in Babci’s garden, watching Flyers games and collecting memorabilia, and clothes shopping with Mom. Derek was thrilled to get his driver’s license in April and enjoyed driving his car.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend his visitation Monday 9:00 am – 12:00 noon at St. Charles Borromeo RC Church, 176 Stage Coach Rd., Sicklerville, NJ 08081. Mass of Christian Burial 12:15 pm at the church. Interment St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Chews Landing. Services under the direction of the EGIZI FUNERAL HOME, Washington Twp.

In lieu of flowers and mass cards, donations in Derek’s memory may be made to the CHOP Foundation, 34th and Civic Center Blvd., Philadelphia, PA 19104, or to Alex’s Lemonade Stand, 333 E. Lancaster Ave., #414, Wynnewood, PA 19096, or to St. Charles Borromeo RC Church at the above address.

i didn't quite know derek, but from what i saw, he was a great friend and a great goalie as well. from the dollars for derek fundraiser in school, he's had a lot of support from friends and family... i'll never share the grief you feel, but i have my best wishes to him and the family.

Dear Schnapp Family: Please accept my heartfelt condolences during this difficult time. I can't even begin to imagine how difficult his must be as parents and siblings. Gussy went to services today, I was upset that I could not attend. He knew Derek and has walked away with such and impression for Derek's love of life, his strength and the stoic way in which all his friends and family held themselves together for Derek. Derek was an awesome young man, a young man older than his years, He left a legacy of strength and love that will live in the hearts and souls of every single person that had the honor to know him. Jim and Eileen, On behalf of everyone at Eptech, I'd like to offer our condolences to you and your family on the loss of Derek. The service and mass was quite moving and inspirational, and the hundreds in attendance was a testament to the impact Derek has clearly had amongst his family and in the community. We wish you and your entire family well.

I was so sorry to hear about Derek's passing. I have worked with Derek's Uncle Dan for many, many years and I know how close they were. Derek was without a doubt a wonderful son, brother and nephew and a wonderful role model to all. I will keep your family in my prayers.

I'm so sorry Derek is no longer here with you. I only cared for him once in the clinic when he received blood late one evening. Your care for him as parents was pretty amazing to witness. I hope you are now, and always, surrounded by family and friends to support you.

We are so sorry to hear that Derek passed away. Our son, Reid, was his friend at Whitman & Bunker Hill before we moved away from NJ. Last summer we returned to the shore, & Derek, along with other buddies, came and spent the day with us. It meant so much for Reid to see him again. Our heartfelt prayers are with you all!!
