William E. Scharnagl
On June 20, 2025, of Washington Twp. Age 72. Beloved husband of Susan (nee Hall). Devoted father of Cynthia Foy (Michael), Lauren Ruggeri (Joseph), Trisha Scharnagl (Michael Ward), and Cheryl Shea (Jeffrey). Loving grandfather of Shawn, Eric, and Cassandra. Cherished son of Doris and the late Joseph E. Scharnagl, Sr. Dear brother of Joseph E. Scharnagl, Jr. (Pauline), Nancy Lafferty (the late William), Cathy Sprout (the late Earl). Loved by his nieces and nephews.
Bill lived his life in South Jersey. He grew up in Blenheim, NJ with his parents, brother, and sisters. He had many fond memories and stories of his childhood. He attended Highland High School and later went on to graduate from Glassboro State College with a teaching degree. In his early years, he rebuilt cars as an auto body technician. After college, he began his career as the Director of Environmental Services for multiple hospitals until his retirement in 2016.
Bill married the love of his life, Sue, in 1975 and raised their daughters together. They were about to celebrate 50 years of marriage on August 2nd. They moved to and still live in the same home in Washington Township since 1977. A day did not go by where he did not have a home improvement project on his to-do list. He was the true definition of a handy man. He took pride in his yard and liked being the family “pool boy” for many years. Bill was enjoying retirement life at home with his wife Sue, their dog Luna and Mimi cat.
Bill was the epitome of a true family man. He was a loving and devoted Dad and Pop-Pop. He was the best Girl Dad because he was strong and tough but to them, he was a giant teddy bear. He always joked how he felt outnumbered because even all his pets were girls and blamed them for his lack of hair. He was their protector and hero. There wasn’t anything Dad couldn’t do in their eyes. He was beyond ecstatic when he finally got grandsons and sons-in-laws added to his growing family to help provide a more equal balance. He worked hard to provide them with all the best life could offer. He was always there offering his support, guidance and love. He was their role model, and his positive influence has impacted them in building our own careers, families, and future.
Bill’s favorite activities included bowling and golf. He was in a bowling league for many years with his father, brother, and uncle and then later with his daughters. He was an avid golfer throughout his life and never missed watching golf tournaments on TV. His favorite place for family vacations was spending a week at the Jersey Shore in either Ocean City or Wildwood. He also took the family van on many overnight trips to Florida to visit family, Disney World, Myrtle Beach, or Hilton Head Island. His other interests included going to the theater to see a musical, playing the lottery, and taking trips to Atlantic City to play his specifically selected slot machines.
Bill was a man of high integrity, kind-hearted and generous to all he knew. He had the best smile and most contagious laugh. He had many cherished lifelong friendships. He loved everyone who was special to him unconditionally and his memory will live on in the hearts of all that knew him.
Family and friends are invited to attend his viewing Thursday, June 26th 10:00 AM – 12:00 PM at the Egizi Funeral Home, 119 Ganttown Rd., Washington Twp. Funeral service 12:00 PM.
