February 21, 1950 – September 11, 2022
Of Washington Twp. Age 72. Devoted father of Jason Gerle (Denise), the late Sherri Gerle, and the late Steven Gerle. Loving grandfather of Eva Grace, Joseph James, and the late Julia Rose. Dear brother of Frederick Gerle, Jr. (Kerry), James Gerle (Rose), Eric (Toni), and the late Bruce Gerle. Lifelong friend of Patricia Gerle, and her children, Gene and Kelly, of Williamstown.
He was born in Philadelphia and grew up in Clayton, New Jersey, where he graduated from Clayton High School in 1968. After graduation, he enlisted in the United States Navy, where he was honorably discharged as a Vietnam Veteran.
He spent 35 years working in the oil industry before retiring from Sunoco Refinery in 2019. Steve loved spending time at the New Jersey shore and caring for his beloved plants. He attended church faithfully every Saturday.
Family and friends are invited to attend his visitation Monday, September 19th 6:00 – 7:30 PM at the Egizi Funeral Home, 119 Ganttown Rd., Washington Twp. Funeral service 7:30 PM.
In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of his granddaughter, Julia Rose Gerle may be made at The CJ Foundation for SIDS, Inc., Hackensack University Medical Center, 30 Prospect Ave., Hackensack, NJ 07601.

We are so sorry for the loss of your father, grandfather, and brother. I know he loved you all very much and he was so proud of all of you.
He will be missed by many. We have loved Steve for many years, meeting him through our sister Pat Gerle. Whenever together and Steve’s name was mentioned my daughter in law Jen always followed it with “I love Steve.” We all felt that way. He had such a great sense of humor, infectious smile and generous spirit. Even though Steve and Patty divorced, they found their way back to one another. They had great love, and a great friendship. We will be forever grateful for his kindnesses to our sister. If she needed anything, he would just show up. He would take her to doctors appointments, make the trek to Magee Rehab and any other hospital or physical rehab center her needs brought her. He would just appear, and make her smile. When she came home Steve regularly visited bringing her favorite coffee with a straw so she could more easily drink it. He simply and quietly made so many thoughtful gestures. We will be forever grateful and words fail me to tell you how much he meant to all of us.

Hello Jason, Denise and family. I’m so sorry for the loss of your father. Steven was so funny, so kind but oh could he speak his mind…as I’m sure you all know. When Fred took me to NJ the first time to meet the east coast Gerles, Steven and Jimmy made me laugh so hard with their razor-sharp quips I was at ease. He continued to be supportive as time and circumstances changed. He really hated Arizona but came out one last time to say goodbye to his mother. Thank you my friend. Rest In Peace Linda Gerle

I grew up with the Gerle brothers and recall thousands of wonderful memories. There
wasn't a day that went by without doing activities i.e. baseball, football, hopping
cars in snow storms etc. As we transitioned into our teens, one at a time, other topics
like cars and girls took over a new type of journey toward adulthood. Steven was a real
ladies man when cruising in his lifted 1957 (green ?)Chevy. Our new role model guy...lol
In closing, my condolences go out to the Gerle family during this difficult time. God has now called Steven's soul to Heaven for eternal peace.

I am so saddened to hear of your Dad's passing. He was a gentleman and a gentle man. When my kids were babies and we lived a few doors down, he always stopped to see if the kids needed milk or to inquire "what's on MTV?" He riled the kids up with his playfulness and his thoughtfulness was always appreciated. We lovingly called him "Mr. Goodwrench" because he was always tinkering on some car. He was a truly decent man and will be remembered fondly. Godspeed, Steve...R.I.P.

We are so sorry for the loss of your father, grandfather, and brother. I know he loved you all very much and he was so proud of all of you.
He will be missed by many. We have loved Steve for many years, meeting him through our sister Pat Gerle. Whenever together and Steve’s name was mentioned my daughter in law Jen always followed it with “I love Steve.” We all felt that way. He had such a great sense of humor, infectious smile and generous spirit. Even though Steve and Patty divorced, they found their way back to one another. They had great love, and a great friendship. He would take her to doctors appointments, make the trek to Magee Rehab and any other hospital or physical rehab center her needs brought her. He would just appear, and make her smile. When she came home Steve regularly visited bringing her favorite coffee with a straw so she could more easily drink it. He simply and quietly made so many thoughtful gestures. We will be forever grateful and words fail me to tell you how much he meant to all of us.
