Shirley Jane Wharton, (nee Roberts) On May 8, 2020 of Washington Twp. Formerly of Wilkes- Barre, PA. Age 86. Beloved wife of the late Thomas Wharton. Devoted mother of Thomas Wharton (Linda), Diane Welsh (Fred), Connie Guldin (Tom), William Wharton (Kim), and Robert Wharton (Beth). Loving grandmother of Dawn, Patty, Ricky, Tommy, Amy, Kelly, Tommy, Billy, Derek, Jarrett, Griffin, Miranda, and Gabrielle. Proud great-grandmother of Joey, Jenna, Jack, Danny, Liam, Logan, Travis, and Emma. Loving daughter of the late John and Elizabeth Roberts. Dear sister of the late Gladys Etter.
Shirley was born in 1933, in Wilkes-Barre, PA. In 1951, she graduated from G.A.R. High School. It was in Wilkes-Barre that Shirley met the love of her life, Thomas “Tom” Wharton. They were married on August 1, 1953, and later relocated to Philadelphia to pursue better job opportunities. Shortly after, Shirley and Tom purchased a home and chose to raise their children in Northeast Philadelphia. In her free time, Shirley enjoyed roller skating, Country Western dancing and Clogging. After the unexpected passing of her husband in 1977, Shirley continued to reside in Philadelphia until she relocated to Sewell, NJ to live with family. In November 2018, Shirley moved to Advanced Sub-Acute Rehabilitation Center where she resided until her passing on May 8, 2020. Shirley was blessed with five children, 13 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Nothing made her happier than to be surrounded by the love of her family. She was a beautiful person, inside and out and will be truly missed by all who knew her.
Shirley’s life will be honored and remembered privately by her family due to the health crisis of COVID-19.
