Robert Daniel Carvelli was born in Depew, New York, in November of 1932. He was the son of Mary and Salvatore Carvelli. His mother chose his middle name because of her love of the song, “Danny Boy.” Bob was one of eight children, five boys and three girls. They were a tight knit family and those who were old enough, helped out in the family business—his father owned dozens of beauty salons. In the 1940’s, when his father decided to expand to Philadelphia, the family left New York and moved to Collingswood, New Jersey.
During the Korean War, Bob proudly served his country as a Corporal in the United States Army. He served from 1953-1955 and spent time in Japan and Korea. He was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Service Medal 1 Bronze Star, and the United Nations Service Medal.
In 1955, Bob began his forty-two year career with Bell Telephone. It was at a union meeting in 1958, that he met the love of his life, Shirley. They married in 1959 and spent sixty-two years together. Together they had five children, Judy, Lisa, Donna (sadly lost at birth), Bob, and Jill. Over the years, Bob’s greatest source of joy, was his beautiful wife and his family, which expanded to now include spouses, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Bob was always happiest when they were all together.
