Owen J. “OJ” Hughes
In his 84th year on October 23, 2010. Beloved husband of Marie Hughes nee Eichenlaub. Loving father of Maryann Hughes George and Veronica “Ronnie” Rossetti Joseph. Pop Pop of Annette Marie and Marissa Elizabeth Rossetti. Also survived by his brother-in-law and sister-in-law, as well as many nieces and nephews.
Owen served 4 years in the United States Navy during World War II. He was a veteran of D-Day and fought in both the Atlantic and Pacific Theatres. He was a long time member of the Disabled American Veterans.
He was a policeman for the Delaware River Port Authority for 35 years. During his tenure, he was instrumental in organizing Union Local 234 of the Transport Workers Union, serving as both Vice President and Business Agent. After his retirement, he was elected to serve on City Council in the Borough of Clayton.
Owen suffered from Alzheimer’s Disease and lived his final days at the Veterans’ Memorial Home in Vineland. In his memory, the family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to either the Alzheimer’s Association, 399 Market St., Suite 102, Philadelphia, PA 19106 or the Veterans’ Memorial Home, North West Blvd., Vineland, NJ 08360
Relatives and friends are invited to attend his viewing Thursday eve 7:00-9:00 pm and Friday 8:15 – 9:15 am at the EGIZI FUNERAL HOME, 119 Ganttown Rd., Washington Twp. Mass of Christian Burial 10:00 am at SS Peter & Paul RC Church, Washington Twp. Interment Gloucester County Veterans’ Memorial Cemetery, Williamstown.
