Mary Virginia “Ginny” Weber nee Sweeney

On January 8, 2016, of Washington Twp. Loving daughter of the late Dr. John Joseph Sweeney and Anna E. nee Collier. Dear sister of the late James Sweeney, F/O John Joseph Sweeney, Edward T. Sweeney, and Nancy Fuhrman and Grace Whitaker. Also survived by many beloved nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews.

After graduating Marywood College Ginny taught Kindergarten in Claymont, Delaware for over 30 years. While there she participated in the Delaware Department of Education revision of the Kindergarten programs and curriculum.

After retiring she became involved in Washington Township government. Her desire to be an independent advocate for the residents led to her serving on the Washington Township Council for 10 years. She was then elected to the New Jersey State Assembly and then subsequently elected to the Gloucester County Board of Chosen Freeholders.

In 2007 she received a special award from the New Jersey League of Municipalities for her “Outstanding Contributions to the Association of Elected Women Officials” when she served as Executive Director.

She was a tireless advocate for her constituents and for those needing assistance. She will be missed by many.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend her viewing Monday, January 16th from 9:00 to 11:00 at Our Lady of Lourdes RC Church, 500 Greentree Rd. Glassboro. Mass of Christian Burial will be following. Internment at Holy Cross Cemetery, Yeadon, PA.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests mass cards in Ginny’s memory.

Lit a candle in memory of Mary Virginia "Ginny" Weber

As a retied kindergarten teacher and former elected official in New Jersey, my Aunt Ginny was disgusted by Donald Trump and the way he bullied other Republicans and hijacked the GOP. Every time Trump does something sinister or stupid, I instinctively reach for the phone. It's been a month since she passed away and I'm starting to realize how much I'm going to miss talking politics with her. Over the years, I came to appreciate her perspective and respect her GOTV tactics. Although we differed on just about every issue, when it came to education, we found a lot of common ground. She would have been appalled by Betsy DeVos and had the political courage to oppose her cabinet nomination.

To the Sweeney Family...My name is Maryann Wood Woerz, I was a dear friend of Ginny and Nancy for over 25 years. I feel so bad that I didn't know that Ginny had passed on, had I known I definitely would have been there to support the family.

Peace of mind is a call away. We’re here when you need us most.

My Aunt Ginny was one in a million. She had such a restless spirit. A wonderful force of nature! A motivator, a spirit lifter, and valued her time on earth as more precious than gold. She is the last of my mother's siblings to leave us. She embodied all the best traits of the Sweeney name- devoted eternally to them. God bless you, Ginny! If you have a disagreement w God in heaven,I won't envy him! We love you dearly!

I am so sorry to hear about the loss of Aunt Ginny. She was such an important and constant part of my life when I was a child. I will miss our phone calls with her stories of my grandparents and parents. She was not only my mother's cousin, but her beloved friend as well.
