Marco, I'm so sorry for your loss. Your Dad was ALWAYS so nice to me! I remember him calling me to drive him and your Mom to the airport when a taxi was canceled. I remember when they came into the restaurant I was working at, with friends from Canada that grew up in the town my Grandparents came from! That was amazing! I remember so many good things! I lost my "Ma" on April 23rd. 86 years old. It's not easy, but I'm thinking my Ma will meet your Dad in Heaven and chat about their Sons

=Eh, Compari!= For those of you relatively new to Arnone fold (you know, just the past twenty to thirty years), check this. I couldn’t stand Mario Arnone when I first met him. I was four years old and in love with Clara Grimaldi. Here comes this interloper. How dare he take away my girlfriend! Then, he had the effrontery to ask me to be the ring bearer at the wedding! I was still so angry with him that I refused. The honor was given to my brother, Frankie. Fast-forward a few years, and he becomes my Confirmation sponsor. Just like that, he’s my godfather. No, not that kind of godfather! Kind and benevolent. [In southern Italy, there’s a way of becoming family when you’re not blood-related. You become “compari.” A woman is your Comare, a man, Compare. The Arnones returned the favor when Marco was christened. Mom and dad became his “Compari.” A nice way of extending your family.] All of this happened as a result of my parents choosing to rent a bungalow right next-door to the Grimaldi residence on Princeton Avenue in Tacony. Clara’s mother, Maria, became my very first friend. (Bless her. Milk and mostaccioli awaited most days. All I had to do is jump the fence between our two homes.). And Clara was my first girlfriend, stolen from me by Mario Arnone! Bottom line…we did become family. Spending the holidays together. Vacationing together. (Atlantic City, Margate, Wildwood. Always a unit with a kitchenette. The women prepared most meals; we kids made Jiffy Pop.). We even bought an apple orchard together, along with Mike and Madeline Grimaldi, in Franklinville, New Jersey. The site of many a picnic, and swimming in the cedar lake a half block away. We all remember setting up St. Josaphat’s hall for the annual Santa Liberata festa. Then, partying, dancing and eating all evening. A big, Tacony shindig. Fast-forward a couple of decades, to Florida. Around the same time that we bought our first home in Port Orange, Compare Mario expanded his business by opening an office in Orlando and purchasing a home there. It was just an hour away, from door to door. When Compare Mario and Comare Clara were in Florida, we saw each other often. We rang in the New Year four years in a row, in festive fashion, with a full house in Orlando. We spent many days playing Scopa and Briscola. The compari danced up a storm at our church, Epiphany, in Port Orange, on several occasions. Fast-forward to April, 2017. Comare Clara’s big, milestone birthday. Cafe Antonio, Maitland, Florida. An evening to remember. Little did we know that this would be the last good time for all of us. Back home, I had my final cappuccino made by Compare Mario. When the Orlando house was sold, it was the end of an era. But, we came a long way, he and I. From the man I didn’t want in the picture, to a man I grew to love and respect, and counted on for honest advice. It would be impossible to number the hours we spent together. A wonderful example for my life. An exemplary man, husband, father and grandfather. Rest well, Compare. All our love to Pop, Frankie and Robert. Arrivederci!
