Lonnie G. Collins
On March 6, 2023, of Sicklerville. Age 77. Beloved husband of Josephine P. (nee Meo). Devoted father of Barry (Missy) and James Collins (Mel). Dear brother of the late Winfred, Hansford, and Thelma Collins. Survived by his sister-in-law Ann Collins and his brother-in-law Frank Meo (Krista). Loved by nieces and nephews.
Lonnie G. Collins, a US Navy Veteran, passed away on Monday, March 6, 2023. He was born on January 1, 1946, the youngest of 4 siblings, in Caretta, West Virginia to Virgil and Octavia Collins. Lonnie graduated from Marion Senior High School in Marion, Virginia where he excelled in football and basketball, earning a letter in both.
His career in the Navy began in 1965 where he served on the USS Uvalde (AKA-88) and the USS Mitscher (DDG-35) as a radar operator. He was honorably discharged with the rank of E4 Petty Officer Third Class in 1969. The Navy also awarded Lonnie the National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal, and the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal.
In 1968, he met his one true love, Josephine Meo at a USO dance while he was stationed in Philadelphia. The very next year, he decided to set down roots and start a family.
Lonnie was a self-taught artist who loved to draw, paint and sculpt in his free time. He was fond of westerns, model trains, and country music, especially bluegrass.
He served as a police officer with the city of Philadelphia from 1977 to Once retired, he enjoyed the company of his beloved wife and two children. He lives on in our hearts and memories.
Family and friends are invited to attend his visitation Thursday 10:00-11:00 AM at St. Charles Borromeo Roman Catholic Church, 176 Stagecoach Road, Washington Twp. Mass of Christian Burial 11:00 AM.
