Karen Eleanor Friberg Feldman of Turnersville, NJ left for her heavenly home on July 27, at the age of 75. She was born in NY to Virginia Medley and Merton Friberg on Groundhog’s Day in 1947 and grew up in Bloomfield, NJ. She graduated from Baldwin High School, class of 1965.
She followed in her father’s footsteps and attended Alfred University, becoming a proud member of the sorority Alpha Kappa Omicron, where she majored in History and Poli Sci and was editor of the school paper.
She then earned her Master’s degree in Education from Rowan University where she met her beloved husband, Michael Feldman. They were married Nov 2, 1973. Together they joined UUCCH (then named the Unitarian Church in Southern New Jersey) in 1976 (?) and became active members. Among her many contributions, Karen served as Newsletter Editor, longtime Chair of the Membership Committee, member of the Board of Trustees and Committee on Ministry, leader of the New UU, Mentor in the Coming of Age program.. She was named UU Woman of the Year in 1985.
Although she succeeded in many professions, teaching was her true passion. She taught at bothCamden and Gloucester County Colleges and was over a 15- year member of the American Federation of Teachers. She was Vice Chair of the local chapter from 2014 to 2017, and Co-Chair from 2017-2020,
She was honored as teacher of the year in 2019.
In retirement she enjoyed spending time with her family, traveling and crossword puzzles and was an avid reader. She could always be found with a new book and was a member of multiple book clubs at any given time. Her longest book club affiliation was with American Association of University Women (AAUW); she always looked forward to their monthly discussions.
She will be greatly missed by her husband, Mike and their two daughters Katy Feldman and Amy Spencer, Amy’s husband Jamie, and grandchildren Cameron, Chloe and Charlotte.
