Joseph M. Ruggeri, Jr., 66, of Sewell, NJ, lost his battle to cancer at home surrounded by his family on January 28, 2020. Joseph is survived by his devoted wife Janet of 42 years, daughter Christina (husband Brian) Tramontano, son Joseph (wife Lauren) Ruggeri, mother Jenni Ruggeri, dear brother of Diane Ruggeri, Irene and Joseph Brusco, Mary June McCann, his loving grandchildren Peyton and Cooper, and many nieces and nephews. Joseph is predeceased by his father Joseph Sr., Father-in-law Albert, Mother-in-Law Mary and brother Albert. Joseph was a loving husband, father, pop-pop and friend to all.

Joseph, or Joe as we knew him, was born in Philadelphia, PA where he lived until moving to Washington Township, NJ in January 1987. Joe loved life. Anyone that crossed his path had a friend for life, and he would take the shirt off his back to help you. Joe was a retired Philadelphia fire fighter, and business owner for almost 40 years, until he retired in January. He was an avid Philadelphia sports fan, and was always the first in line to get any playoff or championship shirt.

Joe lit up any room he walked into. He had such an infectious smile and a way about him that will be hard to forget. He was the life of any party and a true people person. But most of all, Joe was a family man. He loved spending time with his wife, traveling and frequenting local restaurants. His biggest joy was his children, but especially his grandchildren. He was always chasing them around, playing games, and being the amazing pop pop that he was. His face would instantly light up the second he saw them and so would theirs.

Joe fought to the very end in true Joe fashion and will always be our hero. He never gave up and would always say “IT IS WHAT IT IS”.

Relatives and friends are invited to visit with the family Wednesday 8:30 – 10:30 am at Egizi Funeral Home, 119 Ganttown Rd., Washington Twp. Funeral Service 10:30 am.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Joseph’s memory may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.

Dear Janet and The Ruggeri family, in viewing the Obituaries from, Egizi’s. Funeral Home, I just saw your husband Joe had passed away on 1/28/20. I can’t express how shocked and saddened I was of seeing this. I just stared to cry. I had heard that he was very sick, and I had spoken to my son, Anthony, from Pelican Restaurant, about getting your address, because I wanted to send a prayer card to him. I am so sorry that I didn’t send it in time, and I will be saying prayers for him. I feel deeply sad.. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family at this very difficult time. May God give him everlasting peace. Anthony always spoke very highly of you and your husband, and said what a great guy he was. I know what you are going through right now and it is very hard to understand why this happens to such good people, but they say God only takes the Best. With My Deepest Sympathy. Coming in to this big large family many years ago, cousin Joe was ever so kind, considerate to me being a new member. Always took the time during family get togethers to talk one on one, this I didn't take lightly, Being of the same age, this is just a sad reminder how infallible we all are. I feel so for his immediate family and my love to all.

Uncle Joe, you were a wonderful person inside and out. Never judgmental, ALWAYS the peacemaker and the voice of reason. Not to mention, you have EXCELLENT taste in music, in which you lent me many of the classics when I was a teenager that I still have today. Sorry. I have no doubt that you will be with us in spirit, taking care of Janet, Joey and Lauren, Christina and Brian, Peyton and Cooper. Thank you for being a mentor to me and we’ll be seeing you on the other side again...

Dear Janet, Christina and Joey, We are deeply saddened for your loss. When I read that Joe said “it is what it is” I could hear his voice saying it so clearly. Joe always had a smile on his face and it was contagious. We are sorry we didn’t get to see him recently but we have so many great memories to remember him by. Gail and I were greatly saddened on the news of Joe's passing. He was a really nice guy and we liked him from the moment we met him at his son's wedding. We send our deepest sympathies to Janet, Christina , Joe and Lauren and all of the Ruggeri family.

I've been struggling to find the words to express my feelings. Joey was like a little brother to me when we were growing up. I will love and miss him forever. Rest in peace, my dear cousin. Joe was more then an in-law he was my brother. His love for his family had no bounds. Nothing was ever too much when asked for assistance. He was kind and gentile with a heart bigger then the world.
