John “Jack” P. Zukosky, age 95, of Blackwood, NJ, passed on Saturday, April 15, 2017. A WWII veteran and passionate historian of the U S Coast Guard Merchant Marines, he last served on the MS Bidwell, which was torpedoed by German submarine U-160 just 30 miles off the coast of North Carolina in 1942. He was quoted as saying that he was considered “unlucky” for his crew-mates because Bidwell was the third ship torpedoed out from under him.
Recognized by many as the “Buddy Poppy Guy” because of his dedicated fund-raising efforts over the years, Jack will be celebrated by both American Legion Post 521, Washington Township, NJ, and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3324, Runnemede, NJ, during memorial events planned for Friday, May 12, 2017.
Jack is survived by nieces Judith L. Newhart, Faith Dower, and Nadine Dower Bacon; great-nieces Bailey Alexandra Davis and Gillian Davis, and great-nephews, Michael Zukosky and George G. Newhart. Jack, we will miss you and the twinkle in your eye when you’d ask, “You know how to Google, don’t you?”
Relatives and friends are invited to attend his visitation on Friday, May 12, 2017 from 9:00 – 11:00 am at the Egizi Funeral Home, 119 Ganttown Rd., Washington Twp. Funeral service 11:00. Inurnment will follow at the Brigadier General William C. Doyle Memorial Cemetery.
