James P. Shew, Sr., on January 9, 2017, of Philadelphia. Age 81. Beloved husband of the late Marie (nee Cornelia). Devoted father of Donna Buonadonna (Frank) and James P. Shew, Jr. (Denise). Loving grandfather of Jessica (Matthew), Jonathan (Kate), Derek, Ethan, Phebe, Jessica, Jeffrey and Katie (Damaso). Proud great-grandfather of Emmeline, Aubrey, Michael and Trevor. Dear brother of the late Mary Palmer. Also survived by many loving nieces and nephews.
Jim was born November 30, 1935 in a log cabin in Ashtabula, Ohio. He was raised in Philadelphia, PA by his parents, Paul and Alice Shew. After graduating high school, he served as a medic in the United States Air Force and was stationed in Anchorage, Alaska. He married his first wife, Joan Francis, in 1957. They had two children, Donna and Jim, Jr.
Jim resided in Williamstown, NJ for ten years where he was involved with Boy Scouts and was a little league umpire. He was an active member of St. John’s Lutheran Church, where he also served as Council president. Jim graduated from Rutgers University in 1976 under the G.I. bill. He retired from Sun Oil Company as a payroll manager after over 30 years of employment.
He married Marie Cornelia in 1978, and they resided in Philadelphia, PA. They were world travelers, visiting all seven continents. He loved his second home in the Poconos, where he could fish and relax. Jim was an avid fisherman who brought his children and grandchildren to opening day of trout season every year. Jim thought the opening day of trout season should be declared a national holiday.
Jim loved sipping Manhattans at his favorite restaurant, La Buca. He also enjoyed scotch on the rocks and TastyKakes.
But most of all, Jim loved his family, and the friends he considered family. He was a devoted father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He treasured Sunday dinners when the family would gather to watch his favorite teams, the Eagles and Penn State.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend his viewing Thursday 9:00 – 11:00 AM at the Egizi Funeral Home, 119 Ganttown Road, Washington Twp. Funeral Service 11:00 AM. Interment private.
