James Ottie Greenwell, Jr.,
James Ottie Greenwell, Jr. passed away peacefully surrounded by loved ones, October 5, 2015 at Kennedy Hospital in Turnersville.
James was born 1935 in Camden New Jersey at Cooper Hospital. Growing up in Camden, James had many jobs including, selling ice cream, bookbinding, and picking up coal from the railroad tracks. But most importantly, Camden is the place where James met the love of his life, Lorraine Ittershagen. James met Lorraine when they were just 14 years old. He was truly “the boy next door.” They have been together ever since, and would have celebrated 60 years of marriage in November.
In 1954, James served as a corporal in the Army during the Korean War receiving the Korean Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, United Nations Service Medal, and the National Defense Service Medal. This past June, James and his grandson Sam, attended the Honor Flight of Southern New Jersey ceremony in Washington D.C., where he and other Korean War veterans were celebrated and acknowledged for their service to our country. It was a proud moment in his life and he was truly touched by this treasured experience.
After his discharge he began a long career working for Esso, and eventually Exxon, where he was employed as lab technician until his retirement. In his retirement years he worked part-time at Sears Hardware in Glassboro, and also volunteered at Kennedy Hospital in Turnersville.
He was a man who greatly enjoyed the simple pleasures in life, like his Friday outings with his loving daughter Cindy, setting up his miniature village at Christmas time, and a good crab cake dinner. “Poppy”, as his grandchildren called him, loved outdoor activities such as hunting, fishing, hiking in the woods, and camping. He had a great appreciation and respect for nature and all wildlife… except the squirrels that would stop at nothing to eat all of his birdseed! Some of his other interests were baseball and football, always a fan of the home teams, supporting the Phillies and Eagles through good and bad times. He was also a member of VFW post 1616.
He was a loving and supportive father and devoted grandfather, attending countless games, concerts, theatre productions and all events that involved the family and his grandchildren whom he loved so much. His quiet strength, good nature, and easy going personality will forever be missed by his loving family, wife Lorraine, daughter Cindy, son James, daughter in law Jackie, son in law David, and his three wonderful grandchildren, Jacob, Sam and Daisy.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend his funeral service Friday 11:00 am at the Sicklerville United Methodist Church, 406 Church Rd., Sicklerville, NJ 08081. Interment Gloucester County Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Williamstown.
In lieu of flowers, donations in James’ memory may be made to the Korean War Veterans Association, 430 W. Lincoln Ave., Charleston IL 61920. Condolences may be shared with the family at www.egizifuneral.com.
