Heather Bryant left a message on July 20, 2018:
Jim was one of my first co-workers when I began my professional career. He helped guide me to learn the ropes of the industry and was always a true professional and supportive co-worker. I thought I'd share the last email I got from Jim, it was titled 'Joke Time'... "A young ventriloquist is touring the clubs and stops to entertain at a bar in a small town. He’s going through his usual run of stupid blonde jokes, when a big blonde woman in the fourth row stands on her chair and says: “I’ve heard just about enough of your denigrating blonde jokes! What makes you think you can stereotype women that way? What does a person’s physical attributes have to do with their worth as a human being? It’s guys like you who keep women like me from being respected at work and in my community, of reaching my full potential as a person … because you and our kind continue to perpetuate discrimination against not only blondes but women at large … all in the name of humor.” Flustered, the ventriloquist begins to apologize, but the blonde stops him. “You stay out of this. Mister, I’m talking to that little jerk on your knee!”

Jackson McQuigg left a message on July 20, 2018:
On behalf of all of us at the Atlanta History Center, we'd like to extend our sympathies to the Flaherty Family. Jim had a big impact here. In 2009, Jim helped to establish a new facilities management program here at the Atlanta History Center while with Sodexo. He brought about order quickly and developed a great team to help us maintain and operate our facilities, many of which are historic. Later, in 2015, we took over the Atlanta Cyclorama, a significant (but decrepit) facility which housed the Battle of Atlanta Cyclorama painting, an icon here in Atlanta. Jim returned and helped us stabilize that property until we could move the large painting to a new building at the Atlanta History Center's main campus. I appreciate Jim being a great steward of history while working here and of course appreciate his service to our country. I will always think highly of him. My condolences to the entire Flaherty family. I have worked with Jim on numerous occasions over the last 5 years at Sodexo and was privileged to do so. I will remember him as a dedicated worker, a very intelligent man and someone that always had a smile on his face, even in the pressure situations. I learned a lot from him and enjoyed listening to his stories. He will be greatly missed at Sodexo, not just as a key player on our team, but as a really great human being. God Bless You, Jim - and your family as well.

Jim and Barb Bonner left a message on July 17, 2018:
Susan and children: I have no words to offer. I am not a gifted writer. My heart sunk when I spoke with you on yesterday. I knew something was not good when I heard your voice on my cell with Jimmies face and name on my cell phone screen. My heart has not been the same. To say Jimmy was this or that (all great superlatives) would not be Jimmy's way, nor my way. You all have lost a husband and friend, your children have lost their father, mentor, protector and rock. I and many have lost a dear, true, trusted and loyal friend. We will miss him. Prays will continue for you and the family. I think St Michael needed another Marine for a detail. Jimmy has: "fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me." From my wife Barb: Death leaves a heartache no one can heal; Love leaves a memory no one can steal. May God bless and protect you all.

Col Steve Vitali USMC Ret left a message on July 17, 2018:
I was CWO5 Flaherty boss as the AC/S G8 in Iraq for MNF-W. He was a true warrior and I loved bringing him with me on convoys. On one occasion, we were tasked closing a coalition base in the badlands after the unit was urgently flown out leaving us with all their equipment, supplies, and structures to close down. I sent Flaherty to help close the base. I remember on New Year's when I came to visit the operation that Jim was driving a tank on a low boy. Jim had never driven a tank before but that didn't stop him. He was that type of Marine who could always be counted on. I will greatly miss my friend and feel honored to have served with him and have had the opportunity to have had him as part of my engineering staff. SEMPER FI BROTHER, REST IN PEACE
