Jacob “Jake” Neuteboom
On February 10, 2010, of Washington Twp. Age 86. Beloved husband of 62 years to Odilia nee Simons. Devoted father of John Mary. Loving grandfather of Matthew and Christopher.
Jake was born in Den Helder, Netherlands, on February 8, 1924. He was one of six brothers and one sister. During WWII, Jake secretly worked for the Netherlands Resistance Movement underground, was captured and then sent to Buchenwald concentration camp in 1944. In April of 1945, he, along with other survivors, was liberated by the US Third Army. After a lengthy recovery, he returned to Holland. He then went to technical school to become a specialty welder for a local coal mine. In 1957, Jake, his wife and son were given the opportunity to immigrate to the US by the government. The trip consisted of an ocean crossing in a converted US troop transport during an unforeseen winter Atlantic hurricane. After 18 days, they arrived in Hoboken, NJ. Their entire assets consisted of two suitcases, one wooden crate containing household goods and $100. Over the next 40 years, Jake and his wife resided in Clifton, NJ. In 1998, they relocated to Washington Twp. to be close to family.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend his viewing Sunday eve 6:00 – 8:00 pm at the EGIZI FUNERAL HOME, 119 Ganttown Rd., Washington Twp. Funeral Service 8:00 pm at the funeral home. Interment will be private at the convenience of the family.
