John P. Eckert

A devoted man of Christ, John Peter Eckert, 65, of Kearny, passed away peacefully on April 5, 2025, in the care of hospice, surrounded by his loving family, following a valiant fight against Glioblastoma. He transitioned to heaven with the strength and dignity that defined his extraordinary life.

A proud graduate of Kearny High School, he captained both the football and wrestling teams before enlisting in the United States Marine Corps upon graduation. His distinguished military career included service in the Cuban Refugee Crisis, Iran Hostage Crisis, Beirut Peacekeeping Mission, Grenada Invasion, Panama Invasion, and Persian Gulf. A highly decorated Marine, his valor was later matched by his success as the #1 Marine recruiter on the East Coast. After his honorable discharge, he served as a counselor with the Department of Justice, furthering his education to earn a Doctorate degree and dedicating himself to helping others. His commitment to veterans continued through years of service with homeless veterans and as a board member of Veterans 101, a non-profit organization. Guided by his favorite saying, “right or wrong,” John lived with unwavering conviction in all he did.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Mary Jo Eckert (Croft); his devoted children, Christina Cox (Steve), John Eckert (Allison), Joseph Eckert (Julianna), Shannon Vail (Drew), Lacey Shaw (Nick), and Luke Ross (Sarah); and his adored grandchildren, Quinten, Penelope, Presten, Madalyn, Maycie, Titan, Gunner, Ivy Jo, Izzy, and Tucker. He was preceded in death by his parents, Jack and Mary, and his siblings, Joyce, Richard, Steven, and Jeanie.

A man of deep faith and passion, John cherished painting, the beach, physical fitness, exquisite meals, and maintaining an immaculate home and yard. Above all, his family was his greatest joy, and his strong faith in Jesus Christ was the cornerstone of his life, guiding him in every endeavor and leaving a lasting legacy as a man of Christ.

Family and friends are welcome to attend his viewing Saturday, April 12^th 9:45 to 10:45 AM at the Church of the Holy Family, 226 Hurffville Road, Washington Township, NJ. Mass of Christian Burial 11:00 AM. He will be laid to rest at Gloucester County Veteran’s Memorial Cemetery in Williamstown, NJ. In lieu of flowers, donations in John’s memory may be made to Veterans 101 (359 Harding Hwy, Pittsgrove, NJ 08318).
