Harry Shane on November 5, 2021, of Washington Twp. Age 95. Beloved husband of the recently deceased Dorothy M. Shane (nee Loughlin). Loving father of the late Dennis, the late James, Darlene Pekula (Walter) and Jerry Shane (Mary Kay). Loving grandfather of Joanne, Denny, Chris, Christopher, Daniel, Nicholas, Timothy, Joseph, Lisa, Kelly, Tyler, Olivia, and Nina. Proud great-grandfather of 22. Son of the late Harry and Florence. Brother to Albert, Elmour Whitfield (Abe) and Arabella. He is also survived by many cherished nieces and nephews.
Harry was born and raised in the Fishtown section of Philadelphia where he met the love of his life Dot. They grew up living across the street from one another.
Harry was always a hard worker even as a kid, he would make deliveries for the bakery on 2nd St. He also raised and trained carrier pigeons before and after school.
When the US entered WW II Harry dropped out of Mastbaum High School to enlist in the Navy. Being too young, he forged his date of birth and his mom’s signature. While serving in the Navy, he was assigned to LST 41 as a Gunner’s Mate in the Pacific Theater. He also boxed extensively during that time, including an exhibition bout with the Feather Weight Champion, Willie Pep. Harry later said he thought Willie went easy on him!
After serving for 3 years, he returned home and married Dot in 1946. They had 4 children. They moved from Fishtown to Birch St.
Harry worked for many years at Quaker Cane Sugar on Delaware Ave. He also started his own egg route for extra money. He was fondly known as the Egg Man!
Later they moved to Browns Mill, NJ where they were longtime parishioners of St. Ann’s Roman Catholic Church. Serving as a Eucharist Minister and on the Bereavement Committee. For the last 3 years, they have been living with their daughter and her husband in Turnersville.
He will always be remembered for his patriotism and sense of humor. He was always joking with everyone. He is already sorely missed.
Family and friends are invited to viewing Saturday 10:30 am – 12:15 pm at The Church of The Holy Family, 226 Hurffville Rd. Washington Twp. Mass of Christian Burial 12:30 PM. Entombment Calvary Cemetery, Cherry Hill.
