Suddenly, on February 16, 2019. Francis J. “Frank” Culkin, resident of Washington Twp., NJ and former resident of West Philadelphia, Frank was married to Ann Doherty for 52 years. He is survived by his wife Ann, daughters Bethann Murphy (Casey), and Dr. Christine Culkin-Gemmell (Timothy), beloved grandchildren Aislínn, Frankie and Molly, loving sister, Maureen Culkin-Bannar, dear nephews George and Steven.
He will be missed by dear cousins, lifelong friends, former colleagues,
fellow VFW 7679 members and extended family across the pond.
His parents, Frank Sr. and Margaret, were from Ballina, County Mayo, Ireland. Upon leaving military service at Fort Dix, Frank moved to Washington Twp., where he resided for almost 50 years. Frank attended Transfiguration of Our Lord School, West Catholic Boys High School, Villanova University and Temple University.
Frank was a Captain in the US Army, 25th Infantry Division “Tropic Lightning”, and was awarded the Army Commendation Medal for exceptionally meritorious and faithful service, and the Bronze Star Medal for meritorious achievement in ground operations against hostile forces during his service in Vietnam. Frank was an advisor to the South Vietnamese Army.
After military life, Frank began a lifelong career in finance. He was a Portfolio Manager starting at First Pennsylvania Bank, and over 43 years transitioned through their many mergers to Wachovia Bank, where he was Senior Vice President of Wealth Management.
After retirement, Frank’s love for service and the military brought him to VFW Post 7679 in Mantua, NJ. Frank served as Quartermaster at the post and enjoyed his time there immensely. Frank was a member of the Philadelphia Securities Association and several advisory boards, and also served on the Finance Committee of St. Charles Borromeo Church. Frank was an avid reader and technology enthusiast, James Bond fan, loved golf, chess, the Philadelphia Eagles and the Phillies. He enjoyed theatre, live concerts, Jack Daniels and a good red wine, planets and the evening sky. He loved listening to all genres of music, from Gershwin to Willie Nelson and loved spending time with Whitman Square neighbors and friends.
Frank was adored by his grandchildren and spent many days taking them to various activities, attending every dance recital and concert on his grandchildren’s calendar. He loved spending time with his best buddy Dezi, beloved dog, who went everywhere with him.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend his viewing Friday 7:00-9:00 pm and Saturday 10:15-11:15 am at the Egizi Funeral Home, 119 Ganttown Rd., Washington Twp. Mass of Christian Burial, 12:00 pm at St. Charles Borromeo RC Church, Washington Twp. Interment, Gloucester County Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Williamstown.
