Everett (Obe or Ev) C. Obenhein, Jr.
Ev was a special person who loved to talk to anyone about anything and was a wonderful storyteller. If you had the time, he had the stories. One of his favorite expressions was “to make a long story short” but then he’d proceed to tell a long story.
He was raised on the Jersey Shore where he learned at an early age to enjoy the outdoors, the ocean, and fishing. After his early life in New Jersey, he chose the University of Wisconsin, Superior. He then moved on to enjoy a 21 year career in law enforcement achieving the rank of Detective Grade 1 on the Metropolitan Police Department in Washington, DC.
His early retirement years found him moving south to the outer banks of North Carolina and then on to several places in Florida to again enjoy time near the ocean to fish, making more friends along the way. In 2003, he and Trish decided to marry (after being together for many years) and she happily walked by his side, taking in all of the enjoyments of life with him. More recently they took a “road trip” where they traveled back to his alma mater, north through the Canadian Rockies, through a large part of Alaska, back south through California and then back east along the southern states, racking up over 13,000 memory-filled miles. This trip was a life’s dream and it readily produced many more stories and wonderful memories.
His later years were split between New Jersey, Virginia and Florida. Needless to say he was very happy to have spent this past cold, snowy winter in warm, sunny Florida.
Ev was diagnosed with bladder cancer in 1999, but was determined not to let it stop him from living his life. He sought treatment from renowned bladder cancer doctors around the country. He embraced this time in typical Ev fashion, viewing it as an opportunity to experience new people and places. Although the disease finally took his life, it also resulted in meeting many fellow bladder cancer “warriors” and visiting interesting places.
Ev left behind his loving wife, sons, and grandchildren too soon, but is finally free from pain.
Friends and relatives are welcome to join the family for a graveside service for Ev on Saturday May 10th at 11:00 am in Lawn Croft Cemetery, 1000 West Ridge Road, Marcus Hook, PA 19061, Phone: 610-485-1878.
