Eugene “Gene” Carangelo, 67, of Myrtle Beach, formerly of South Jersey, passed away peacefully with his family by his side on Monday, August 12, 2024, at McLeod Seacoast Hospital in Little River, South Carolina.
Gene was born on February 20, 1957, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, the son of the late Eugene J. Carangelo and Dorothy Belz Carangelo. In addition to his parents, Gene was preceded in death by his stepson, Tony Ruggerio.
In life, Gene worked as a tractor-trailer driver, and later continued his passion for driving and helping others by training and mentoring the next generation of truck drivers at Miller Motte Technical College. In his leisure time, Gene loved shooting pool, going to the casino to play craps and slots, and watching his beloved Philadelphia sports teams. Gene’s passion for teaching and mentoring others started on the field, where he served as a volunteer coach, and devoted “softball dad” for his daughter Sarah (aka “Skip”). Gene was extremely handy and loved fixing things. No matter how big or small the project was, you could always count on three things: it would eventually get done, it would look great, and it would require a lot of him talking to himself under his breath. While he was never one to be the center of attention, he had the best sense of humor and was known for his quiet one-liners. He had an uncanny ability to make everyone laugh, especially himself. Even on his toughest days receiving chemotherapy treatments, he brought a light to all those around him, and quickly became a “nurse’s favorite” at his treatment center. Gene was kind, honest, hardworking and dependable. Above all else, Gene was a devoted Husband, Father and Poppy – the lessons and love he left them with will never be forgotten.
Gene is survived by his loving family, including his devoted wife of 11 years, Mary Carangelo; his daughter Sarah “Skip” Carangelo and her wife Niki; his grandson Leo Carangelo; his stepson Paul Ruggerio and his wife Lauren; his step-grandchildren Ellie and Rian Ruggerio; his sister Dorothy Lerch and her husband Dave; his sister Linda D’Auria; as well as countless nieces, nephews, in-laws, extended family members, and many friends, all who will forever cherish his memory.
Family and friends are invited to attend his visitation Monday, August 26, 2024, at 10:00 – 11:00 AM at the Egizi Funeral Home 119 Ganttown Road, Turnersville, NJ 08012. Funeral service 11:00 AM.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. Jude Children’s Hospital (https://www.stjude.org/donate/).
