Eleanor, or Nanni as she was affectionately known to loved ones, was born August 2nd, 1938 in Newark, NJ and grew up in nearby Irvington. She graduated from Archbishop Walsh High School and then went to work at Prudential Insurance.
Eleanor married the love of her life, Joseph Dunne, at St. Leo’s Parish, on October 26, 1963. They moved to Wayne, NJ, where they raised their three beloved sons, William, Jeffrey and Kevin, later moving to Pompton Plains. Together they enjoyed many family camping trips, covering the entire East Coast of the United States. She was involved in her boys’ school activities including the PTO, and also served as den mom for the Cub Scouts.
Eleanor had a wide variety of skills and interests which included sewing, crafts, cooking and gardening. She was always busy working on a project, whether it was making handmade Christmas ornaments for her children and grandchildren, sewing matching dresses for her granddaughters, making teddy bears and blankets, or knitting hats for newborn babies in the hospital. She will be fondly remembered by her extended family for the amazing Christmas cookies of 21 different varieties which she lovingly made year after year.
Faith and family were the center of her life. She was an active parishioner and member of the Columbiettes for several decades at Holy Spirit Church in Pompton Plains, NJ. She and Joe continued to practice their faith at Saints Peter and Paul Parish in Sewell when they moved to South Jersey in 2014.
Eleanor warmly welcomed her two new daughters, Patty and Linda, when they married into the family. Her favorite times were spent surrounded by her six grandchildren and her dog, Gracie. She enjoyed many wonderful times on vacation with the entire family.
She was the epitome of strength and courage throughout her six-year battle for life. Despite the unimaginable challenges she faced, her faith never wavered.
