Elbert L. Lovelace
was born in Leechburg, Pennsylvania. He was the youngest child of the late Luther and Jessie Lovelace. Elbert survived all three of his brothers (John, Luther and James). He also had a sister who died at birth. Elbert transitioned from this life on July 18, 2024.
Elbert spent his childhood and early adulthood in the Pittsburgh area, where he graduated from Leechburg Area High School. As a child, he enjoyed skiing on “the hill” in Pittsburgh and playing sports. After getting his brother Luther to forge their father’s signature, he got the chance to play football for the high school team! This was a highlight of his high-school years.
In 1952, he began working at ALCOA Corporation while starting a TV repair business, which he maintained from 1954 to 1957. Elbert settled in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, where he lived most of his life, before moving to Sewell, New Jersey to live with his daughter and her family. He worked for 32 years in the open-hearth department of United States Steel Corporation in Fairless Hills, Pennsylvania.
Elbert married the late Eula Jean Andrews, with whom he had his three sons Ronald, Timothy (deceased) and Darryl, whom all affectionately called him “Pop”. He later married the late Barbara Jane Byers, with whom he had his daughter Karen. Elbert was married three additional times. Over the years, he adopted five canine fur babies (Star, Jeanie, Queenie, Teddy and Heidi). He adored each one of them!
He had many interests. During his early years In Bucks County, Elbert was a member of the masonic lodge. In later years, he attended bible college. This marked the beginning of him becoming a bible scholar and later serving as a deacon at Norton Avenue Baptist Church where he was a long-time member.
Before his vision failed, he would read his bible every night before bed. Over the course of his lifetime, he read the bible, cover to cover, five times and would happily share his bible knowledge with anyone who would listen. He could talk for hours about scripture, important figures in the bible and their descendants and the descendants of those descendants! He strived to be a dedicated and faithful servant of the Lord, and he was!
Elbert enjoyed fresh-water fishing at the pond behind his house and at local lakes in Bristol Township. He and his daughter Karen would retrieve night crawlers from under the slate steppingstones, in the backyard of his Bristol home, in preparation for the fishing expeditions he would take her on. He studied astrology and liked to bowl. He was a skilled chess player, an avid gardener, a good cook, an artist who enjoyed painting with watercolors, and a gifted freehand artist. He passed that gift down to his grandson Justin Lovelace, who could create beautiful freehand drawings from a young age. Elbert excelled at anything he set his mind to doing and he had an amazing memory! He would often tell stories and would include the specific details about what the weather was like on that day, the time the event took place, physical traits of the person he had a conversation with and the color of the shirt they were wearing at the time. His daughter Karen would often have to re-direct him saying “Daddy, get to the story please”.
He was a hard worker, a loving father, trusted friend, devout Christian, dedicated student of the bible and generous soul who will be missed dearly.
Those left to cherish memories of him are his sons Ronald and Darryl; daughter Karen; grandchildren Madeline, Ebony, Leon, Justin, Sean, Samara, Natalie and Serena; six great grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; two nieces; many cousins; friends and church family.
Family and friends are invited to attend his visitation Saturday, July 27th 10:30 – 11:30 AM at the Egizi Funeral Home, 119 Ganttown Rd., Washington Twp. Funeral service 11:30 AM.
In lieu of flowers or other acts of sympathy, donations in Elbert’s memory may be made to one of Elbert’s favorite charities, Jews for Jesus, Jewish Voice Ministries International, Rescue Purrfect Animal Shelter, or Gloucester County Animal Shelter.
