He was inducted in the US Army in 1953 and discharged honorably in 1955. He then went to Saint Joseph’s University and earned a degree in political science. He received his Master’s degree at Rowan University, previously known as Glassboro State College, in history. He taught in the Philadelphia School system and retired his teaching career at South Philadelphia High School. Edward is survived by his wife, Elaine, of 59 years. He was the loving father of Elaine Lack (Craig), Thomas Harkins (Judy), and Kathleen Wakefield (Jeffrey), daughter-in-law Dorothy Harkins, and family dog Cassie. Edward was a devoted grandfather to thirteen grandchildren, Kellianne Worthington (Jim), Shannon Cabry (TJ), Patricia Harkins, Melanie, Melissa , Kevin, Kyle, Connor, and Cara Lack, Jennifer, Leanne, Matthew, and Patrick Harkins. He was a devoted great-grandfather to Carter Worthington. He was a dear brother to Carolyn Summers (Russ). Also survived by many cousins, nieces, nephews, and his cherished friends.
Edward loved the Notre Dame University football team. He never missed watching a game on the television. No matter where he was or what he was doing, if Notre Dame was playing, Edward would be watching or listening to the game. He visited Notre Dame University and saw a football game in 2004 with his granddaughter Kellianne Worthington and his son Thomas Harkins. Edward was a fan of the Philadelphia Phillies baseball team and the Philadelphia Eagles football team. He went to many games over the years. He also cheered for Saint Joe’s basketball team.
His favorite interest was reading the newspaper every morning, as well as completing two crossword puzzles before he would start his day. He also enjoyed his Saturday night card games with his good friends. One of his favorite places was the Jersey shore, whether it be the beach or the Casinos. He always made sure a yearly summer vacation was a must.
His time with his grandchildren was one of his second favorite interest. His greatest accomplishment was having a close relationship with his three granddaughters whom he raised as his own.
He should best be remembered as “Anyone can be a best grandfather, but it takes someone special to be a best Pop-Pop.”
