At the age of 16, after the death of her father, Kay began working as a telephone operator for Bell Telephone.
In May, 1954, Kay met the love of her life on a blind date. She went home that night and told her Mother she was going to marry John Lee, and she did on June 8, 1957. The newlyweds left shortly after for Germany where John was stationed in the Army. Kay often walked through town talking to everyone and was soon known as the “happy American”. Their first child, John, was born there in 1958.
Upon returning stateside in 1959, the family moved in with Kay’s mother in Highland Park and continued to grow with the births of Valerie, Joseph, and Mary. In 1966, the family moved to Long Island and Kay’s mother followed them a year later. Jim was born there in 1967 to complete their family. Kay was a wonderful mom as well as caregiver for her mother.
In 1974 the family moved to NJ where Kay worked for JC Penney catalog for 6 years. She loved her customers and many became friends. She left to care for her aging mother, but returned to work as a telemarketer in 1984 for several publications. She retired at age 66.
Through the years as her grandchildren came, Kay was always available to care for them. They were the joys of her life and she loved nothing more than to have her family around her. She passed away surrounded by her loving family.
