Barbara C. Horneff
On July 21, 2023, Barbara C. Horneff (nee Krause), of Sicklerville, passed peacefully in her home after a courageous battle with breast cancer. She was surrounded by family and friends, celebrating her 80th birthday and her amazing life.
Beloved wife of the late Joseph Paul Horneff. Devoted mother of Catherine Lafferty (Keith), Lauren Turk (Christopher), Gregory P. Horneff (Karen), J. Randall Horneff (Michelle), and Jeffrey C. Horneff. Loving grandmother of Sarah (Ariana), Katie, Kevin, Karli, Koryn “Koko”, Annabella, Victoria, Kory, Lianna, Josephine “Josi”, and Harper. Dear sister of the late George Krause (Lynne).
She is survived by her sister-in-law Patricia Nolan (Bill; deceased), daughter-in-law Janine Horneff and an amazing group of lifelong friends and extended family members including, Bonnie and Bob, Ginny, and Chuck. For the past several years, her network of friends has continued to grow, thanks in part to the activities at her community clubhouse.
She was raised in Palmyra, NJ by Catherine and George Krause. Her Lithuanian heritage was a source of pride growing up and was both fondly and jokingly brought up when she would sound like her dad, you know, that “stubborn Lithuanian”. She worked at Rohm and Haas, as a keypunch operator (that thing old fashioned computers needed to actually work) where she met the love of her life, and soulmate Joe. They wed and proceeded to have three children, blended with two from Joe’s prior marriage, and became the Horneff’s version of the The Brady Bunch.
Five kids and ultimately eleven grandchildren, Barbara (“Grams”, “Grandmom”) loved her family and family time. We’ll give the Cliff Notes version here, because otherwise we’d need the whole newspaper. She became a professional babysitter for the family, and her payment of choice was babysitting. Family was so very important to her. Graduations, soccer, softball, basketball, competitive cheer, ice hockey, piano ecitals, and plays are just several of the events where you could find her. Christmas parties at Perry Drive, family birthday dinners at Shelly Street, or Thanksgiving dinner at one of her kids’ was always a highlight for both her and the family. Family Game Night became a regular event over the past few years and she would not miss it. Who wouldn’t want Grandmom on their team?!
She loved travelling, even if it was local. While she travelled throughout the United States, the Caribbean, and overseas, Tuckerton and Cape May were a couple of her local favorites. Dining out was a favorite of hers as well. Onion rings? Great. Leftovers? Even better.
For her rare downtime, you could find her reading, and of course most recently, that would be on her Kindle. She loved science fiction in any medium; TV, movies, and books. Like Sheldon, she thought Star Trek was hands down better than Star Wars. Period. All the versions of Stargate? Well, she and Joe had hours and hours (and hours for good measure) of them taped because you never know when you’d want to watch them. Of course, she would indulge in some game on her cellphone. She was definitely one of the first gen Candy Crushers!
Barbara will never be forgotten. Our lives are fuller because of her. We are all better because of her. Mom/Grandmom/Barbara… you are already missed. Your memory will never be gone.
We will love you forever. Thank you…
There will be a celebration of Barbara’s life at Villari’s Lakeside Sunday, August 13 from 3-530 pm. 2375 Sicklerville Rd, Sicklerville NJ 08081
