Angela Merola
(nee Perone) On February 24, 2017, of Washington Twp. Age 80. Beloved wife of the late Domenic. Devoted mother of Philomena Rue (Richard), Salvatore Merola and Anna Fanelli (Gregory). Loving grandmother of Linda (Matthew), Nicole (Phillip), Angela (Joseph), Jacqueline (Matthew), Dana (Joseph), Gregory and Nicholas. Proud great-grandmother of Anthony and Anna. Dear sister of Domenic Perone, Concetta Natale, Filomena Cappabianco and the late Antonio, Frank, John and Pasquale Perone. Angela is also survived by Sis D’Alonzo, her sister of the heart, and many loving nieces and nephews.
Angela Perone Merola was born in the town of Pontelatone, in the province of Caserta on July 27, 1936. The daughter of Anna and Angelo and the oldest girl with seven siblings, she was raised on a farm and at the age of 7, took on a large role in cooking and caring for her siblings. Cooking and caring for her family would become the story of her life.
It was during her childhood that she developed a love of dancing. It was also during her early years that she witnessed the Nazi march through Europe. In 1957, she traveled to the United States, but shortly returned temporarily to Italy where she met her future husband. While on the family farm, she encountered a handsome hunter by the name of Domenic. In 1959, she and Domenic returned to the United States and settled on Paschall Avenue in southwest Philadelphia. Angela and Domenic quickly became rooted in their community, and although they were American, they remained close to their relatives in Italy.
Angela was a woman of many talents and made a living as a seamstress. Domenic worked in the trades and their story is elegant in its simplicity. They worked hard, enjoyed friends and family and loved their children. In 1961, they welcomed a wonderful baby girl named Philomena. In 1962 Salvatore, his mother’s pride and joy was born. And in 1965, a beautiful baby named Anna formed the branches of their family tree. They lived on Paschall Avenue until 1992 when they moved to Aldan Pennsylvania. In 1996, they moved to New Jersey and their family continued to grow in number and strength. By then, Angela had seven grandchildren that she completely adored. In 1999, Domenic finally lost his battle with cancer and passed away. He was surrounded by his loving wife and family.
Angela loved gardening; she certainly would have wanted to be in that garden on the unseasonably warm late-winter day that she was called Home. She had a green thumb and especially loved all types of bright flowers. She also loved taking walks to the corner produce store on sunny days. In her later years, Angela doted on her grandchildren and great grandchildren, Anna and Anthony. Her family was blessed by the many stories she would tell of her as a young woman in Italy, her new life in the United States, and her journey with Domenic throughout her adult life. Angela’s family was the center of her world, and she showed love for her family through cooking.
As her time neared, she was cared for around the clock by her children, grandchildren, extended family and friends, especially her dear friend of six decades, Sis D’Alonzo. Even as her time in this life drew to a close, she would muster the strength to smile for her family. Though she rests now, her heart beats on in the generations she created.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend her viewing Tuesday 8:15-10:15 AM at the Egizi Funeral Home 119 Ganttown Rd., Washington Twp. Mass of Christian Burial 11:00 AM at the Church of the Holy Family, Washington Twp. Interment, SS Peter & Paul Cemetery, Springfield, PA.
