Andrew A. Prieto
Tragically and unexpectedly on September 4, 2023, of Glassboro, age 80. Andrew was the beloved husband of Karol Sue (née Kooker) and devoted father of Scott Prieto (Katie) and Kristine Carter (James). He was the loving grandfather of Ian, Ryan, Ethan, Trevor, and Claire. Brother of Rita Herr (Nicholas).
Born in Havana, Cuba, January 17, 1943, Andrew immigrated to New York City at the age of 11. After overcoming the barrier of not speaking English, he went on to earn a Ph.D. in biology from the University of Missouri, where he met and married the love of his life. They would be happily married for 54 years, spending every minute together. Settling in Glassboro in 1973, Andrew became a revered biology professor at Rowan University for 40 years, where his teaching changed the lives of many. He was also known for bringing reptiles to the classrooms of his children at Glassboro schools to instill a sense of wonder and love of learning.
Andrew was an avid tennis player; he could be found every Sunday for decades on local courts. He continued his love of exercise at the gym and shared this passion with his daughter. He also loved to travel, especially with his family and friends, whether it was to the Galapogos Islands, Alaska, Spain, Italy, or any place he could find an adventure.
Andrew’s greatest role, however, was being a grandfather. He loved his grandchildren more than anything. “Poppy” was everyone’s world and made sure his grandchildren had the world in return. His love, pride, and generosity were immeasurable. Anyone who knew Andrew, knew how much he lived for spending time with his grandkids, often saying these moments were the best part of his day.
Whether it was as Dad, Poppy, Dr. Prieto, or Andy, he was adored by all. His smile and sense of humor were infectious. He will be sorely missed.
Andrew’s life will be honored and remembered privately by his family.
